I want to start recording just vocals and bought some things I read that I needed.

I have a:
ZOOM MRS-4 recorder
Yamaha MG10/2 Mixer
CAD GLX2400 Condenser Mic
Stand
Cord

Now what else do I need. Maybe something to hook up the mixer and recorder? And maybe something to send my vocals to the computer to burn to CD and mix with the instrumentals? idk

Can anyone help me please?

Thanks,
Taka

sounds like you have all you need for now, just some cables to go from your mic to your mixer to your recorder to your speakers

Looks like you can get the files into your computer if you have a Smart Card reader. They're pretty inexpensive (under $10 at a place like monoprice).

Are you recording your instruments to the Zoom recorder? How do you plan to synchronize your vocals with the instrumentals?

What kind of computer to you have? cockos.com Reaper is an obvious choice for inexpensive multitracking.

I don't think the Zoom has phantom for his condenser microphone.

Yah it doesnt have phantom power.

Well I have all the instrumentals made on FL studio already I just need to recored the vocals. im thinking of putting the vocals to instrumentals threw Adobe Audition.

Yah I think Ill get one of thoes smart card readers. haha

Thanks,
Taka

Hmm. I'm trying to recall if FL Studio will slave to midi information. If that's the case you could connect your msr-4's midi output to your computer's interface. (I'm assuming that you have a PC with a 15 pin joystick port on it. Often times they have a built in midi interface that you can access with the proper adapter.)

Monoprice.com may sell such things as well.

Or if you just bought these things you could return them and get a cheap interface w/ preamp. It would make it a lot easier I think.

i agree with the interface. it doesnt seem like you need a mixer at this point. if you want a nice mic preamp there are better choices in the budget range.

Haha I was thinking of going with interface or recorder. And I forgot now why I went with the Recorder but I got these off ebay. So I cant return it now. But its ok. :D

Ahhh I cant make a new thread, so ill post my new problems here.

Ok I cant post images untill I have like 5 posts so after this ill post it.

Thanks hahah

Ok heres my new problem...
Ok well I got my Mic, Recorder, and Mixer. Yes I did read the manuals that they came with...But it was very hard to understand or follow.

Ok well I started by turning on my Recorder. And since in need a mixer and phantom power I pluged my 3 pin XLR into the #1 mic slot on my mixer. Then I found a cable that looked like it could work in connecting my recorder to my mixer. But I dont know if its the correct phono jack.

But I tried and pluged it in anyways turn on Phantom power and did alittle test by recording the #1 track and playing it back. But I didnt hear any sound.
So I thought maybe I pluged it in the wrong place.
The blue shows where I connected the cables. "master" on the recorder and "REC OUT" on the mixer.

Ok I was trying to work it and after a few hours I got the Mic to work and can hear it threw my headphones, but I cant hear anything when I record and playback.

Im thinking I need a TRS phone plug cables and connect it to mixer and recorder right? then it will work?

Haha

I have that same mixer. You need to plug the mic into the mixer with XLR, not TS or TRS. Only the XLR is phantom powered.

Then plug your mixer from the stereo outs to your recorder. Then you should be able to hear it fine

Oh yah I pluged the XLR into the mixer and turned on phantom power. And I can hear when I talk into the mic. But when I try to record and play back I cant hear anything.

I connected the mixer to the recorder with the jacks, but it doesnt work. So do I need to hook anything else up? like TRS plugs?

Thanks

The phono (RCA) sockets you've highlighted on the Zoom recorder are the outputs. You need to go out from the mixer to a line input on the zoom.

And if you're recording a mono signal you'll only need a single cable. So one RCA will go from the red (I think) RCA out on the mixer and then the other end of the cable will need to be a 1/4" TS jack and will go into one of the inputs on the recorder.

Ohhhhhh ok.

OK now let me get this straight like a banana I need to do this?

First buy a Cable that has one end RCA red/white plugs and the other side a 1/4" TS Jack.

And plug it in to where the red is marked?

Mixer

Recorder (I typed what it says just in case you cant see it clearly)

And then everything should work out fine? haha

Thanks for the help,

You only need one phono connector at one end, 1/4" TS at the other. Or you could just use a cable with 1/4" TS at both ends and go from one of the stereo outs, the right hand side should work as a mono out. Or you could put a 1/4" jack into the channel insert until you hear the first click, then it'll work as a direct out from the channel and bypass the rest of the mixer routing.

Why are you going to the aux ins on the recorder? Either of the main ins should be OK.
