Building Gobos

So I've begun building my own gobos. I have most of the wooden frame set up. What material that is cheap to get would work best? I was thinking a combination of Plywood and old thick blankets would take care of both low and high frequencies. Any other suggestions?

Don't put a full plywood back on it. Maybe just some slats.

As for filler, the cheapest good broadband absorber is mineral wool. Blankets are a crap shoot.

TIP.... most cities have a used office furniture outlet of some sort... if you dont insist on real pretty ones the old cubicle pieces make GREAT gobos and way cheap....

well too late, my dad and I just finished the frame, now I need to put something on it.

Search for rockwool or rigid fibreglass.

If you can find rockwool get RW3 OR RW5 and if you can find rigid fibreglass I believe oc703 or oc705 is what you want. Its not too pricey.

Ring around some builder's merchants.

Are these really that good? I want to isolate the drums in my studio a bit more from the amps (I like to do off the floor stuff, but just have one big room, well medium sized, 10 x 24). That would definitely be an option as oposed to a plexi screen that I was considering, but not wanting because of reflections. I don't really have the space to store gobos, so had already written them off as an option. I usually divide the amps with blankets and area rugs because they are easy to store, but the drums always have a bit of instrument noise in them that I'd like to tone down a bit more.

I second the mineral wool...

I purchased 2 boxes of 2" OC 703 (12 pieces total) and 2 boxes of 4" mineral wool (6 pieces total) to make my absorbers....made a world of differance. I used the mineral wool in the corners and the 703 on the walls....these panels are divided between 2 rooms and some are on stands so they can be moved around when needed.

Heh went to Home Depot today, nobody there had even heard of Mineral Wool. Guess its just calling everywhere in town.

Its called Rockwool and sometimes Roxull (in Canada). Just ask them for rigid fiberglass.

If you're going to call around, try the HVAC contractors and metal building insulation dealers.

Yes on the rockwool/fiberglass being the filler material of choice, but be sure you get stuff that is between three and six pounds per cubic foot. The fluffy stuff in home improvement stores is too loose.

And you do want one side of the gobos to be a hard surface.
