I have spent about two days and about 10 hours trying to configure my set up and I'm going crazy. If any one knows, I need explicit setting instructions so I can record into DP 4.5 on my powerbook. Here are some of my questions/problems:
1. What midi cable configuration do I need using a Midisport 4x4 (usb) from the JV-1080 and the Kurzweil PC88?
2. What midi settings do I need to have in the 1080 and PC88?
3. Why can I not get the patches I want and keep them in place in DP? (I'll set the patch I want and then it changes, or the Default Patch and Patch are two different settings. I know there's supposed to be a master channel configuration or something in which I can access and keep all of the patches, etc. that I want from DP. I can change the sounds from the physical module and keyboard, but I know something is off with that because I should be able to change them from DP)

I'm in performance mode on the 1080, Local Control is set to off on the PC88 and the channels are all on "two". My teacher in college set up my JV-1080 and I messed something up and am totally lost now, please help or shoot me in the right direction. I know this is basic stuff and old equipment...but I'm on a learning curve here :o) Thanks!

Hmm, lots of DP questions.. Wait for dgatwood, thats his ax

Here are my general midi (non DP) answers:

1. the correct setup would be midi out of the controller into the midi in 1 of the midisport, midi out 1 of the midisport to the PC88, midi out 2 to the JV midi in. Connect the audio output of each to and audio input on whatever sound interface you are using

2. The PC88 has to have the "local off" enabled, this will decouple the keyboard and controls form the tone generator which will now be controlled via the midi input. Set each device to receive program changes externally if it is an option (it may be on by default). Since each device is on its own midi port, have the basic channel of each one to be 1 to keep things easy. When you make a midi track just assign the output and inputs accordingly. The JV is a multitimberal synth meaning that is can play multiple patches at once via different midi channels so if you want to use that feature, you will need to setup the performance to include the patches you want and have them on different receiving on different midi channels (ie patch A receives on channel 1, patch B on channel 2 and so forth). Read up on how to do that in the manual. When in voice/single mode, the JV should play on whatever the basic channel is set to. In DP just make a separate midi track for each patch and set the midi channel it sends on accordingly

3. What is happening with the patches is that the sequencer is sending a bank/program message when the track starts, to fix this just use the DP midi track controls to select the patch you want to use instead of using the front panel of the synth (get used to doing this btw, it makes a lot of sense). Why its resetting is probably best left for someone who actually uses it though

Ok

that helps a lot! I understand the basic channel assignment stuff...making sure they align in all peripherals, etc. (I'm not sure if that's the right way to say it or not...). But I know there's a way that I assign everything from DP. That's my main problem now is that I'm thinking there's some mode that my modules should go into where I just control everything from DP instead of having to manually assign them on the front panel. Is that right, or did I dream it up?

There should be no special mode for that unless there is some on board filter that prevents it from responding to external program change commands. Midi commands are midi commands no matter where they come from and the module should respond to them accordingly. Check your manual, it will have a midi implementation chart that will very specifically explain what the module responds to and how the voices are mapped out as far as banks and programs changes go

Dgatwood is a member here, just do a user search. I know he runs DP so he should be able to answer more program specific questions than I can

Ok...it's starting to make more sense. Thanks for your help!
