Probably not. You'd have to experiment a lot to get a decent picture that way. On the bright side, you wouldn't have to worry nearly as much about phase problems.

It's still hard for me to get used to the idea of a mic as good as the mc012 being "too expensive" at $100 used. I know it's probably true, but I just have trouble accepting it.

Kind of like a super hot and nice chick who has difficulty finding dates. Something just doesn't seem right about it.

603's for distance micing ?

It sounds like everyone agrees that the 603's are a great buy for acoustic guitar and drum overheads but has anyone ever used them for a choir ?

I know this is not the first choice for the 603's but I have a situation where I need to record and/or sound reforcement for a choir. In a distance micing X/Y situation like this I was wondering how the 603's would perform.

Any thoughts.

Thanks

wait, if the nt3s are hypercardoid.......

does that mean a pair of them with the sonusman (or was it mixerman?) drum technique won't get a good picture of the kit????
:(

I've been using NT3's as overheads and they are ok - but I have not been blown away either. I am going to get the 603's I think...see if that will give me a little more of a "brilliant" sound...or just different i guess. heh

i am a big rhode-fan, but i do have a matched pair of at 4041's and a pair of the mxl 603's. i was blown away by the 4041's from day one and thought the 603's sounded like dookey...compared tot he 4041's. My studio partner liked the sound of the 603's until he heard the 4041's. BUT, I know several people who rave about the 603's. So, I guess it just depends on what YOU like. I did several tests in 2 different studios, and my results were the same. I would spend the money and get a matched pair of 4041's. I got mine from 8th street music.

just my 2 cents.

I've got a pair of NT3's which I love, I use them for everything from overheads to guitar amps, and Im always happy. Im thinking of adding a pair of 603's to have another flavour though.

Does anyone know who has the best price on 603's right now?

Thanks

$79.00?

Wow! I think you can get them for $69 almost anywhere?

I'll keep looking?

I think Shreve Audio has them right now for $69.00

Thanks

I used to have an AT4041....It was OK on acoustic, too clinical sounding though - I liked the 603s WAY better for acoustic guitar - I just think AT stuff is harsh....IMHO

I have a pair of NT3's too... and some Marshall MXL603S's. Get the Marshall MXL603SPR (matched stereo pair)... it come with shock mounts, foam screens, and a nice case.

I have matched pairs of both. Spend the extra $$$ and get the 4041's. You can get them at 8th Street for $199 each, just buy the bulk pac ones. IMO, they are extremely accurate mics, so if the sound isn't there to begin with, they don't offer much in the way of embellishment.

If you go with the 603's, do get the matched pair. It's worth it.

The main reason I got them is because Shreve Audio has them for $49 + shipping (both were under $110 w/ shipping...thanks to who ever posted that site's name (in another thread)...it saved me about $60).

I just called and the Shreve Audio and inquired about the $49.00 MXL 603s. He quoted a price of $69.00, and he said he had not sold any for $49.00.

I thought it might be too good to be true.

It wasn't too good to be true long ago when they actually had them on sale at that price. It is now.

I bought a pair of 603's from Shrieve Audio for $49 each a while back. Free shipping too as I recall. Bought a pair of MC012's from GC not to long after that for $100 for the pair. You just have to be patient and watch for the sales.

If anybody sees a deal like this, I'd sure appreciate a heads up. I need four SDC cardiod capsules for prototyping an inexpensive DSP assisted Ambisonic mic.
