Hey i recently bought an SM57 and i am doing my recordings by plugging the 57 into a PA system then into my computer, is this the same as a preamp? would a preamp make it sound any better?

Just looking for some advice thanks

Well a PA would have a mic pre amp in it ...You need one to use a mic so it goes without saying that a PA would have mic preamps ....

As for the quality of the Preamps that is another story , only you can make that distinction ....

Cheers

:cool:I'm not sure, that you may need "phantom power" to use the mic?

I have the KSM 32 and it needs phantom power. But, you can check it out.

SM57's are dynamic, they require no phantom power. Your PA mixer pre's will work, but they may not that good.. What kinda mixer?

On the other hand, the preamp in a good PA may be better than a real cheap recording preamp. Usually live equipment has a fairly cruddy signal to noise ratio, but not always. Use your ears. If you can hear hiss or hum, it sucks.-Richie
