hi guys , after much research have now decided to get the zoom q3hd as opposed to the h4n which will , i presume , save me the hassle of synch ing up post production the audio and video . basically everything rolled into one unit
however if the q3hd is positioined the recommemded 3.3 feet away will i need mics for voice and instrument for best sound , now i m guessing you dont really have to but i would like to get few recommendations of best to buy that wont cost too much , i play classical guitar and acoustic with vocals , i have no experience at all of recording , thanks for time and advice , alan ...... ps i cant plug in my guitars so would either have to buy one that can or a pick up or just have a mic in front of it ,,, open to suggeston .... really im just interested in putting good quality video s on you tube

I've got the Q3 (bought before the HD came out Grrrrr).

Anyhow the mics on those things are pretty much good to go. Here is some crap I recorded with it. Thing can handles some SPLs. Both are just the mics on the unit. You can see how shit these things are in low light situations but maybe they fixed that some with the hd model.

I would start with finding the best sounding (and looking) space for recording, with plenty of light and minimal echo, then experiment with placement of the Q3HD. Depending on how much of the guitar and body you want in the shot, you can get pretty tight. Then pull the track into REAPER with the ffmpeg libraries added and tweak the audio in post. This is also where you can trim the heads and tails of the shot.

Check out my Homebrewed Music blog (if my sig shows) for a post called "Playing the Angles with the Q3HD" which demonstrates how close you can get when using the Q for acoustic guitar.

Hey Fran that was some great stuff! But what was doing the video recording when both you and the Q3 were in the same shot? An other Q3?
