your recording with the SM57

There is nothing wrong with '57s they have been around forever for a reason. They can do a reasonable job for cheap. Try ES 57's and EV CO4's too. I use all of these mics with reasonable results. For the home recording buff you just gotta ask yourself "what is reasonable performance?". Like most engineering projects you will reach a price - perfomance trade off where you start spending more and more for less and less improvement in the recorded sound quality. How much are you willing or able to spend? IMHO the ES 57'a and and EV CO4's are the best bang for the buck when trying to record for cheap. No doubt that a few good condenser mics will improve the sound significantly though. All you need is cash. Believe me, the room that you use to do your recording and mic placement are at least as important. Someone that knows what they are doing can make an acceptable recording with these mic. Also remember that the average listener isn't going to have the same critical ear as the person making the recording unless it really sucks.Just my take.
