I heard the song earlier 'cause I heard it when I was listening to your 1.5 blues and it's a great song as are all of yours.
I think kjam really does have some good ideas to try on this. I like the fermata idea a lot. And a single violin ( a real one ....David K where are you? ) would be very nice threading it's way around the melody. If you use a string patch....I'd like to hear more of a string section. Also....I'm not sure that I'd use drums. Maybe.......but I'd probably try accessory percussion first. Some lite congas and woodblocks.....something like that.

I belong to the younger side on this site, but I think I can relate myself to this song tho. I once woke up in morning and thought I had already turned 80, and being in the 20's was just a dream I woke up from. Pretty scary experience.

Has a country edge, but sounds very James Talyor to my ears (that's about the biggest compliment I can give, BTW). The tune is awesome.
I'm not in much of a position to comment on production, but If I were I still wouldn't. Sounds great.

Damn, I thought this thread died a long time ago! I still want to get back to this and do a proper treatment using the input of so many here. I thought it would be fun to seek outside direction instead of listening to my own subjective producing ideas.
Lt Bob--Hey, I wrote it while I was still 40 something, so when I sing it now, it makes me feel YOUNG again!
A1A2--I've had similar dreams of being very old and dying. Only when I woke up, they were true. (Not really, but I HAVE had similar dreams--yeah, scary stuff!)

He's on Saturdays noon to 3. I haven't listened in years, but I used to every Saturday. Back then anyway he sure did his share of getting music from local musicians on the radio.

Here's a creative something: have you ever heard any of Van Morrison's stuff from the early 90's? He had this guy called Nigel Kennedy singing alongside him on lots of his songs. You could do something similar on the chorus. I can hear that other voice. You don't have to put it there, but if you do, make sure it's a *young* voice. It'd make for excellent drama.

It's a good song, and Tom Waits could do it too. Also, I know better than to make the mistake of thinking every song a songster does is autobiographical. But I've gotta say something about balancing this song with some other song that has over 40 impact. I've finally figured it out. If I was your producer, I wouldn't be bothered about changing this song much at all - what I'd be focused on was the whole album, and how to get your ass into a higher gear on the next tune.

I'd ditch the ac gtr and replace it with a piano in the beginning. Then come in with wide split double tracked acoustics to help your build on the 2nd verse. Kinda maybe the opposite of what you got going, actually, Then I hear the full symphonic arrangement taking over that, which has been suggested. Oh yeah... female backups too...or at least a counterpoint female part to play off of.

Just listened to this again and man you are in the zone on this one.Lyrics,melody and chord progression grabbed me in an emotional way.This definetly has the it factor......something special about this song crawdad.
