yet another starting equipment thread

i know you guys have probably seen this a billion times. so sorry in advance. anyways. i am looking to start basic recording setup in my room. as of right now i have the following.

alesis multimix 8 usb
laptop with cubase
mxl 990 condensor mic

i would like to know what else i need to progress to a accaptable recording setup. plan to be recording vocals, guitar, bass, drums, harp, piano and maybe more. i want to know in what order i should buy stuff, the most essential first up to the goodies. im going to buy this over time so i want to know what i absolutely have to have first (ie. monitors mics). so as far as budget ide like to keep it as cheap as possible but stuff that will last me as i expand. i plan to mic bass and guitar amps, and drums in the future but im not worried about drums right now. thanks for any help

Monitors. If you can't accurately hear what you recorded, how can you make adjustments?

SM57 is a standard for guitar amps, and for snare drums. Although there are arguably better (and more expensive) mics for both, these have been proven and work well. You'll always have a use for it.

I think the best way to get info on this would be to use the SEARCH BUTTON. There have been tons of posts about this!

im in a similiar situation and i was wondering if anybody has anybody experience with Roland DM10 Digital Stereo Micro Monitors. They're only 145 on musicians friend.

I did have the Edirol MA-10DBK monitors for about a month. I posted a pretty fair review of them at Musicians Friend but it never showed up on their website. If you're super broke, or just need some low powered pc speakers, they're usable I suppose.

i'd suggest a soundcard with atleast 4 inputs as i noticed your using the multimix usb.
Problem with the multimix is it actually only allows you to "dump" 1 stereo track of all your inputs to the PC on 1 stereo track.Not good for drums in IMO.
You need seperate tracks atleast for the kick..snare...hi-hats...and overheads.
Just by getting seperate tracks of the basic drum parts will improve how your recordings sound.

you have a few choices still..theres usb and PCMCIA...now it depends on what your budget is!
