Yet...another Erland song

Great!

You definatly nailed the production.
I think if you brought the drums down and added some acid guitar it would be perfect!

Sounds like a hit!

Really fine.

Best to you,
Pete

I too kind of like the unexpectedly bashy drums...

there's a moment when the song just begins, just before the verse starts, where the cello and the -- synth? backwards guitar? -- kind of pops in, and I found it momentarily jarring. (It almost sounds like what happens to me often when I try to fix a mistake and I overdub a part -- I can almost always tell, it just doesn't sound natural.) It might be nice to make the sound of the cello that's playing blend smoothly into the line I'm talking about, or otherwise smooth the beginning so it sounds less like something got dropped down there after the fact...

Otherwise a great job, nice blend of instruments -- always loved cello in this kind of song, reminds me of Cream's Wheels of Fire stuff, the very un-Creamlike Jack Bruce stuff ("As You Said" and "Passing the Time").

I'm kinda mixed up as to who everyone is and who wrote what, but somebody's got some talent there :)

Good recording, I feel the drums should set just a HAIR back in the mixed (as was mentioned). And it seems like it needs that frosting on the cake, like an acoustic strumming or banjo (he-he) or something. But cool song!!!

I downloaded the original version before seeing this thread.

I really like your take on it. It preserves the folky/rootsy style of the original but makes it interesting to more, ahem, 'modern' listeners. I've seen several people mention that his stuff could be on the radio, but I can't see it happening. Not cuz it's not good enough, I just don't see contemporary average joe liking it. I can see your version on the radio.

The drums do seem a bit too strong in the heavy parts. I like the beat, they're just kinda loud, or too crunchy sounding. Sorry I can't be more specific, I just don't know.

It's amazing how musical taste works... one person thinks the exact opposite of another, and they both believe that they're "right.. of course we all know there is no "right" taste in music... I only say that because.. well... I didn't like much of the re-mixed parts... but the one part I didn't mind at all was that intro... and someone else said the exact opposite... that just struck me as odd...

Mix,

I agree w/WATYF. I'm not into the groove at all. I think it detracts from the song. The violin, the pan flute - thing...these just aren't working for me. Production-wise, sure, it sounds fine. Smooth and glossy. But, musically, I think you overpower Erland's voice and playing. The focus has become your additions, which aren't working for me.

As for ap's comments about Erland's music not being commercial enough, I say, so be it. Fixing a song so that it will get played on the radio, if that's your goal, is fine, I guess. But this remix doesn't do the song justice.

Hey Mix,

Great produciton as always. I really liked the tribal, thumpin drums, think they work perfect with the original track though I agree they seem to drown the guit at times, which sucks as it's a fabulous guit line. I agree that the drums are really good for after the fact, I've tried doing that to some tunes and it's really hard to 'match' everything up correctly, which I think you succeeded in doing. Someone mentioned maybe having that violin a bit more of an integral part, which I think would be cool. Sam commented on your having large iron balls (or something) for taking such liberties with this re-mix, and I will echo that sentiment *nice balls, yaaaaayyy* Anyways, nice job man, you've got a cool signature sound, that's something I'm working for!

finally get to listen and...

Well that was wicked. The Drum was a wee bit shocking at first but then the more I listn the better it got. You have really transformed the song. It sounds much happier. I thought that there was definately a beatles vibe going on with the violen performing about. This sounded like Harrisons Indian instr. I enjoed it, thanks. My computer harddrive is buggered, I lost all my songs...this cheered me up.

Erland

Anyone who says the original is better hasn't a clue. I listened to the original and you finished a song that was incomplete. I think you should lower those drums. They are too loud in the mix. Lower the drums and this is done. I'm not really into this type of music, but I liked what was added on the remix. The drums are too loud though. Nice Job.

Roth

mmm

Wasn`t that bad to start with was it. I kind of thought it was complete Roth, in its own way. Well I suppose mixmr is quite a champ at making music anyway so thanks mate.

Great song! It has a great quality about it, and I really liked the lyrics. The mix sounded balanced, except for the drums are a little loud. That would be my only feedback, but otherwise this song is very good!

Erland.. you don't have to go making excuses for the original... I think Roth has had one too many bong hits in his day... ;) The original was complete... it was pleasant and well-rounded and excellent in what it was intended for. The addition of all these superfluous extras could have been a plus, but since the mix was unbalanced and the sounds/rhthyms that were used were not the best choices, it detracted from the original instead of adding to it, so I have a hard time seeing how the additions made it more "complete". That's like someone saying that "Fire and Rain" by James Taylor is "not complete" until they add thumping drums (played by Lars :p) and a Casio keyboard lead to it. :D

you're absolutely correct. The song was finished on its own right, and the James Taylor analogy is a good one.

I thank the many who have listened to it so far..especially Erland, and can ONLY credit the interest to this thread to Erland.

My objective in this was to actually try and turn the song around, do something unexpected, give it a bar room feeling, but mainly have fun and share it all with the good people here. .... and doing so, sure beats laying asphalt on a hot summer day....eh??:D

The feedback has been interesting, but predictable in that there would NOT be a middle ground in liking wether you could take such an acoustic song, and making it more "thumping." The drums ARE intentionally loud, and imo don't drown out the vocals, but sure put the guitar by Erland in the background...which in my case, I didn't care too much, as all I wanted was the vocals, really...Then I wanted to bastardize the song from there:rolleyes:

Anyway, it has been fun, and I hope down the pike, I'll have the opportunity to do more stuff like this, without stepping on peoples toes and their music. The colaboration ideas have been great, but I was tooo anxious to "wait" on something like that. Both, my apologies and thanks.... :)

I like the remix too.. although the drums are too loud, I like it better with them.. I might side with the Roth opinion because he really didnt say anything negative about the original...just that he liked the remix.. and I agree..

mix, you posted at the exact same time... I typed that before I saw your reply..:D

cool..

oh...and not that it really matters....but instrument wise..

there was the violen, played on guitar with my Roland GR-33
some bagpipes...as heard in the beginning....(I thought Wales..hmmmm), but the patch wasn't so good.
Caliopee...in the begiining too....but kinda hiden, soundwise.
fretless bass patch off the GR33...in the beginning
...but bass guitar kinda intentionally left out of the mix ...I didn't see the need for it with the "thumpin' "!
..and some other instruments tuned down an octave to provide a lo-end sound....kinda like clavinet sounds crossed with dulcimers.
All instruments to try and mimick Celtic/Wales, kinda instruments...but it didn't really end up that way....like most of my intentions..
the windchimes and space effects relate to "many years from now".....get it??;)

thxs again....over and out..

What a swell guy.. :) I knew you'd take that in the way it was intended... (P.S. I wasn't implying that your lead sounded like a Casio. :D I was just exagerrating for a little "effect" :p )

But like I said earlier.. musical taste is exactly that.. "taste"... so that's how one person says that the drums were overbearing and another says the drums "completed" the song... that's just how the wonderful world of music works...

I give mixmkr more than enough credit, though, just for having the balls to do something like this, and risk having people (like yours truly) rip his "additions" to pieces... :p

By the by.. the windchimes intro was my favorite "addition"... but what the hell do I know... :p  :D

Errrr...la(n)d

I predict IF you play this version for your sweetie, she'll get hives!! (vs. goosebumps)

Well I liked the crap out of it! Basically I agree with all the positive comments and disagree with all the negative. While the original version is certainly "complete" sounding to me, I really like the remix. It has a great bounce to it that the drums add. The violin is great and you do a very good job of phrasing it so it sounds a lot like a real violin.
I can just see a bunch of happy people out in a field dancing and tossing telephone poles. :D

And Erland.....man you are a song writing monster. I really like your work. If I ever get some time I sure would love to do some work with you or one of your tunes.
Great job guys. :)

This is scary. In my head, Erland has alwasy been this one man band with an acoustic guitar only. Now he's got the whole US army marching behind him. Crazy......
