I'm about 3/4 of the way through Phillip Newell's "Professional Approach to Project Studios", and I gotta tell ya - you read this one and it will up your audio standards a notch or two (while at the same time cringe if you ever reach for another piece of Hosa cable!)

It demonstrates excellent concepts on why even when a novice has good gear it still sounds like a stinking pile of dog crap.... but more, it really describes how to take whatever your current level of recording involvement to the next level - and tries to demonstrate where the current trend of accepting deteriorating audio quality comes from, and how to get back to a professional standard.

And no mythical green marker scrap either - just good solid information to remind us of what "professional" really means in the recording industry.

Also - a word of caution - those with 4-track/PortaStudios will probably feel somewhat insulted reading this book - but if you get around the bruised ego, you'll actually learn a lot - even if it may not immediately apply to you.

Not a book for everyone, but love it or hate it, you'll probably find it interesting!
