I'm a old school guy to so I monitor through my board. I have a 8 in 8 out echo layla (pci) card. I set up output 1 & 2 as my default computer output and as the main out on my software (sonar). I run those outputs to a couple channels on my board and I mix in what I'm recording (on my board) so I hear tracks being recorded and prercorded tracks all at once, but it's all routed through my board not at the software or soundcard level.

I wish I could explain it better.

That's the way I do it to, I just have more I/O. If you have a mixer, this is the best way to do it.

Ya, and if I use a pre other than my board I just run a parallel output to my board for monitoring.

Do you guys know of any good layout diagrams/schematics, of different chains/set-ups? Still confusing to me:confused:

BTW, I really appreciate your help and patience with this digital crap. About a yr. ago, I sold my Roland VS-880 and vowed never to try digital again, too damn complicated.

Digital seems like it takes so much time tweaking stuff, you don't actually have time to do much playing.;)

Do you have a mixer?

Here is a link that has all kinds of useful info: http://www.tweakheadz.com/guide.htm

Digital is just like analog, you have to do the setup before you play. Only with digital, you can normally save a template for your setup. Then you only have to do it once.

Thanks, Farview! Looks like a good site.

Mixers---Yamaha 8 ch., Peavey 24 ch., Fender 12 channels. So, I'm not hurting for channels or wattage! Kind of leery, I guess, i don't want to fry anything by pumping too many watts into a Firewire thingy.

But, I'm crazy. Think it'll handle about 2800 watts into each input?

Just kidding.

Maybe!

YOu definately don't want to plug the speaker outputs of a powered mixer into an interface....EVER!

The easiest way to make this happen is if you have direct outs for each channel. You would plug the main output of the interface into two channels of the mixer. The mixer main output would be plugged into the monitors.

When you want to record something, you would plug the mic into a channel on the board-> plug the direct output of that channel into an input on the interface and set the software to record that input.

That way, you are listening to the mic that you are recording right through the board, instead of through the software.

If you don't have direct outs on the channels, you can use aux sends in the same manner.

[Presonus Firepod w/Cubase LE]

Does this guy work well with Reaper, or do you have to use Cubase?

I have no idea what I'm talking about:confused::D:D

I don't own it so I can't swear to it but You should be fine with that combo.

I have that Alesis which is very similar to the Firepod and I use Cakewalk Home Studio 2004 XL, however here Lately I've been messin with both Reaper and Cubase LE with no problems.

Should work fine with reaper. They always package with a lite version of some recording software. It's no indication of what it works well with really.
