I have this Yamaha MT8X and so far it's pretty killer!

Yesterday me and my buddy recorded 5 songs for a Metal/Punk band we are starting. So far it's a nice clean but somewhat raw sound. We used two mics and recorded drums and guitar at once. Right now, im trying to figure out how I can record on a third track. We used track one and two already, and im trying to use track 3 for Bass. I have track 3 selected, I press record, and when I play bass the wavs come up (bassically notifying it's picking up the sound). But I do not hear the Bass when I play back.

Does anyone probably know what this is? I am getting confused and frustrated (as most beginners with home recording do). If anyone has a suggestion please let me know, I would really apreciate it... Thanks!

First off, clean and demagnetize the heads (if you haven't already). this is NOT an optional step!

next get a fresh tape and try to record the bass to a different track and see if it plays back from there.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply! First id like to ask what do you mean by cleaning and demagnetizing the heads :D?

Second, I tried a fresh tape and nothing came up!
 
The recording and playback heads need to be cleaned periodically - q-tips and 90%+ alcohol work for that, plus if you search this forum there are some other techniques that could be helpful. To demagnetize the heads, you need a demagnetizing wand - there is a very good one still being made but the make/model escape me.

If you don't have a manual, you can download it from Yamaha here. I'm assuming that you have the original model (MT8X), not the MT8XII...that manual is located here. There is also a downloadable project planning sheet...could come in handy. I cannot overemphasize the value of reading and understanding the manual, and this may take several passes. Many want to take the shortcut and figure they'll figure it out as they go, but in the end time and frustration would have been saved had the time been taken to study the manual.
 
Hey guys,

Thanks a lot for all the tips! I ended up figuring out how to work and record on seperate tracks!

Now I wonder what is better, using a mic to record guitars or direct line in?
 
when you know how to do it: mic!
when you wanna have some demos or some warm and clean lead tones try direct!

there's no better, you have to try in order to achieve the sound you want.
