Yamaha REV500 vs. Lexicon MPX550 any thoughts?

hi there...

just how it says in the title...
i have a chance at both these units (second hand) and i dont really know wich way to go...any input on this?

i can also go for a new TC 300...all units are more or less the same price, considering the other 2 are second hand..

tanx in advance for any help..
 
Haven't used the Yamaha... but I'd recommend the Lexicon over the TC (at the same price point)
 
Thats a tough one. I think the sound quality on the Lexicon is better, but those yamaha's always have a few settings on their that just rock.... See if you can maybe find a used yamah spx 900 or 990 in that price range. Then you get the best of both worlds:D
 
what if thats totally not possible...

a rev 500 for 100 bucks, practically new...i cant pass this up, and i really cant afford anything else... :/

i see u even mention the TC.....
not worth it?

The REV500 is primarily a reverb box. For $100 that's a great unit for your studio. Snap it up and then later on get a box that's more of a multi-fx box, like the MPX-550 (or any number of other boxes).
 
I own both the Lex MPX500 & TC M300 both which provide more than adequate signal processing.
The Lex gives me a greater control of effect parameters by allowing lower than usual incremental adjustment of .1-2 values (where several dsp's in this range adj @ .5+). This is significant when fine-tuning/tweaking "Plates","Studio","Room" 'verbs etc, and obtaining that right amount of delay & time.
Though the M300 does not have as many effect patches as the Lex nor the flexibility to exact "critical tweaking", the patches contained in this unit are solid. Heavy on var delays (studio,tape,digital, slap-back etc.), decent timing can be had by using the "Tap-tempo" ctl (don't use if you've been partaking in alky-holik libations or you'll produce incoherent efx like me :p). It's 'Verb patches are excellent especially "Plates 1&2", "Vocal Studio" and "Drum" rooms.

I can't offer any opinion on the Yammy other than to say some have sung it's praises while others have totally panned it, but IMHO, the Lex and the TC provide more than acceptable signal processing for the money.

Just my .00000000000000000000000000000001/2 worth.
 
primarly a veb box...yep...im planning on gettin it...especially now that i found out that the MPX 550 i was going for is actually an MPX 500 with a upgrade 2 Chip or whatever..somehow it doesnt "smell" that good :/

the tc gets rave reviews for the buck...and its really cheap...but ill get the MPX 550 (a real one!) then when the chance comes along...ill look into the TC later...

unless anyone says that that Upgrade Chip thing really turns an MPX 500 into a real MPX 550.......

anyone?

Shoot Lexicon an email. They should be able to sort that one out for you. I would snatch that yamaha up for $100. If the Lexicon was about that same price I would grab it as well. Even a Lexicon $500 wohtout the upgrade chip is worth that kind of money.

The reason I did not mention a TC unit is because it would take a TC M3000 to match the flexibility and sound quality of a Yamaha spx 900 and up. Since I didn't think you would be able to find an M3000 for a low dollar amount I did not mention it. The cheapest I have seen a yamaha 900 go for is $250, but they generally fetch between $350 and $500.
