The Devil Has Blue Eyes
Hi All,

I'm putting together my first home studio and I just purchased this USB mixer. I'm wondering if the mix pre-amps on this board would be considered good enough to record good sounding vocals or should I purchase an external pre-amp? If I should purchase a pre-amp, any low cost suggestions? I am currently using a MXL 4000 mic.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi

They'll be fine. Depending upon your level of experience, which I'm assuming is low at this point because you haven't said otherwise, the quality of your mixer's preamps will be the least of your worries at this stage.

You may decide at a later date you want a standalone preamp - fine - but for now, I'd just get recording and start learning the basics.

Cheers

So you don't think it will noticably change the quality of sound? What about a tube pre amp? Thanks for your response

You'll get different sounds from different preamps, no doubt.... what I'm saying is, if you're starting out, the weak link in your chain is most likely not going to be a pretty useful quality Yamaha mixer preamp... and before you make any decisions to spend any more money on anything, you should do some recording and listen to what you hear and seek advice on how to improve it on the offchance that it turns out not to be perfect. :)
