yamaha mt8x problems

Hi dudes

I'm having a problem with my new (second hand) yamaha MT8X. I recorded a constant signal from a keyboard with DBX noise reduction off ( I like the feeling of more headroom and air you get with DBX off ). When I play it back, I can hear a rhythmic pulsing sound that sort of sounds like a tape playing. When I tried recording a guitar part, I couldnt hear the sound. I tried cleaning the heads but that didn't affect the sound.

Any suggestions as to what the problem might be will be greatly appreciated.

Hmmm, that IS strange...

Is there already other material recorded on the other tracks, particularly adjacent tracks? (Could be crosstalk due to tape head alignment issues)

What make/model keyboard is it? Does your keyboard make this sound on its own when you monitor through headphones? Are you recording the keyboard hot enough? What keyboard patch are you using when you're getting this sound, or is it present on all the keyboard sounds?

Just out of curiosity, are you also recording the guitar with the dbx switched off? (I'm assuming you are.)

Personally, I'd use the dbx. Your recording will be much less noisy in the end. If you want an open, airy sound, you could try patching an exciter to your effects send, altering the keyboard's eq internally (if that feature is available), or even boosting the high eq on the MT8X some during the recording process.

Have fun with your MT8X. I had one for about three years and it served me well.

I am recording on a new tape, It happens on two kinds of keyboards, and last night I recorded a long singing signal on one note and the same lapping sound was noticeable. I'm going to buy a demagnetising unit tonight and see if that works.

What's an exciter?
