Yamaha MSP10 review....

I understand where you're coming from, Tex, ... it's just you got me thinking on a tangent.

For instance, the whole "can't polish a turd" postulate would also not apply to the whole industry and associated techniques of restoration and enhancement of early audio recordings.

Sorry for the irrelevancy... I just have always been reluctant to accept people telling me what "can't" be done! :D

Wow, i never knew a single post was made on this thread til now. I was about to post some more thoughts now that I've used them more.
As for the NS-10 comparison, its time to reevaluate that thought. They sound practically nothing alike, aside from the forward mids, which still sound better on the MSP10's. Also, these use a quality titanium dome tweeter, gonna be hard to make them sound like a cheapo NS10 tweeter. These sound better and bigger and fuller. Period, almost nothing to debate there.
More in a minute....

And, you CAN polish a turd...

You just gotta freeze it first.... :)

Ok..

STEREO IMAGE... not quite as strong as I expected, but pretty good. I like an exageratted stereo spread, like the expensive paradigms have, but I guess these are natural in that respect, so thats good I guess.

High end.. seems very smooth, they dont seem as overly bright as I expected them to be, either. I really like titanium dome tweeters(which is why I like the Paradigms too), which was a big selling point for me. Though they dont really seem bright, turning the high end up on the monitors output channel REALLY comes on strong and hard and fierce. They seem pretty flat to me in the top end.

Low end.... Nice, tight, not earth shattering lows, but the lows are focused and have plenty of chest pounding... maybe a TAD hyped, but it might be my listening station, too... pretty close to walls, on 3 sides.

Mids... Forward. Never really knew what forward mids meant until I heard NS-10's. Kinda eeky on some stuff with NS-10's. These arent the same kind of forward... its like there is forward-harsh, and forward-smooth, these swing to the smoother side of the two. The mids I think are what are gonna make my mixes shine better. I dont know why, but it works. So far. Time will tell yet.
But the mids are weird for the 1st 10 minutes, and I was about to send them back, but suddenly, pow... its like things sound like they SHOULD.

Fatigue... Not enough time at once on them yet, but they seem fine, not as fatiguing as the 20/20's, and no where near as bad as NS10's, for sure. These just dont sound like NS10's.

Volume... gets pretty loud and stays solid and clear. So much so that I'll catch myself having them super loud, and have to turn down, only to find them loud again. In this aspect, they jam. I have yet to see the red clip light come on. More on this later, too.

I think these deserve way more of a chance in everyones lineup than what they are given, for sure. I also think the whole NS10 and Yamaha thing ruined thier chances for survival, and that these are better cabs.

More to come...

Now this is my opinion and thats what this forum is all about, but i think the NS-10's are crap. They got popular becuase of a simple buy out of yamaha. Years ago.......don't know exactally when, Yamaha had distributed these NS-10's to major record companies for them to listen to their clients albums. So to insure that the sound that was mixed together at the studio's is the same as what the record companies will hear the NS-10's became a studio standard due to what i would call a "format issue". It's a smart thing to do and it makes sense to get them for that, but now days i wonder if it is?

I see it as a fad due to how people explain them ........."i want to get those bad ass white coned speakers i see in studio pictures". You know what this reminds me of?........hahaha the Triton keyboards.......that subject makes me laugh.

k im done........time for more beer!

the sad thing is I dont think you've ever used a pair. It seems like a variation the canned response I see all over the internet

zallen,

how much faith do you have in your 824s?

Post a mix.

I can get rid of my whole studio and the ns10ms would be the last thing to go.

I did a mix on ns10ms that I had listened to like a thousand times. I took the CD to guitar center and listened to them on the Mackie hr824s and the KRK v8s. I was expecting them to have mad low end and to hear things I had not heard before. WRONG. IT was exactly the same thing. Those babies TRANSLATED.

Now I cant say that the mackies translate quite as well. I heard ONE TOO MANY UNBALANCED mixes from 824s

While I agree with you that its Naive to buy monitors because one sees them in lots of pictures, some people rely heavily on ns10ms and place a lot of weight on their sound.

Oh by the way, I know that it would be naive of me, but if I had the money I would bye QUESTED because all the pictures of my favorite mixers and songwriters have QUESTED in the room

I think they do make for some good mixes, but I dont want to listen to NS10's for very long, the ones I heard sound papery and I didnt care for it much at all. I've heard nightmare stories about fatigue on them, but thats all individual milage I guess...

I do like these MSP10's pretty good so far though...

no the sad thing is .......you assume you know me, but you don't. You don't know what I have or haven't experimented with. There is a difference between what looks good and what sounds good.

nice dodge of the question!

by the way, I can't figure out if you are saying the NS-10's look good (first time I've ever heard that...) or that your speakers look like crap?

by the way - congratulations. No misspellings or bad grammar in your last post! :D

(now, most of your other ones, on the other hand...)

And now i will question your grammar, due to the fact that there was not a question or even a question mark in the previous post. I was refering to any monitors, BYE THE WAY. It's not about what other people think, it's what you/me/him think about monitors.

Well first off........did you check to see if the monitors were out of phase? If they werek, it would explain the missing low end that you were probley expecting. I would seriously check that again, because yes i work at a GC and as for the demo cable the store gets, not all of them are wired up right. I have ran into plenty of crapy cables and one thing for sure is I always set up the KRK's and Mackies the right way. Things move around in those stores all the time and a lot of the time things are just put together so fast because people want to go home.

I trust my 824's quite a lot. They translate very well, and that's about that. I will try to post something once i get some time, but its not going to sound the same if i convert it to Mp3, so if you're wanting to test a mix I would say I would rather just send you a CD, but whatever, I like feedback on my mixes anyways either it be good or bad. : )

If you want you can check out a band i recorded with a VS-1880 almost 2 years ago, there stuff was mixed on some older M1's I think.

well, zallen, the whole issue only came up because once when i was trying in a totally non-hostile way to help a non-native speaker with the proper use of the term "bias" (noun) vs. "biased" (adjective), you decided that i got some sort of thrill out of picking on people's spelling and grammar.

If that was the case, I'd have a full time job just dealing with your posts alone. Just taking your last two posts on this thread as an example, we have:

"refering" (referring)
"bye the way" (by the way)
"werek" (you're excused: probably a typo)
"probley" (probably)
"crapy" (crappy)

and the following lovely syntax:

"I like feedback on my mixes anyways either it be good or bad"
(substitute "whether" for "either" and you will have said something in English!)

these examples pale next to some of your other posts in which you delightfully torture the english language. I never mentioned it in the past because it seemed like you were a native speaker, not someone trying to learn the language. I just chalked it up to the decline of our public education system, or some such thing that wasn't necessarily your fault, and certainly no concern of mine. Besides, we all misspell from time to time. Though some a lot more than others!

I won't bring it up again, because I think the point has been made that if I was really out to pick on people's spelling etc. i would have started on you long ago. Unless, of course, you'd like my help in improving your language skills. (Not a bad endeavor...) Though somehow I suspect you're not interested...

Dude i don't freeking care.........if i was to care about spelling everything right i would take the time to do so. I have other things to worry about than to spell check everything and fixing typo's before posting my comments. I just say what I have to quickly and get on with it. Im sure other people can figure out what people are saying regardless........GET OVER IT! Nice dodge as well with the question mark BS. This is not an english grammar forum, its a recording information forum.

i don't care
i don't care
i don't care
i don't care lol do you get it yet? no i don't think you do.

i don't care
i don't care
i don't care

Zallen25: You sure do get along well with everyone here. Do you get along with the people at your store this well?

I get along with the people that are like-able. I'm only bothered by the same two or three people on this forum, everyone else is cool as far as im concerned. My job is irrelevant to this issue, good day.

well looky here if it isn't zallen again. zallen would you kindly please shut the fuck up. I used to find you moronisity entertaining, now it is simply annoying.

1. "damn........are all you guys using a PC to run roxio? I haven't had any problems using roxio, but Im using a MAC, maybe that explains it."

"mac rocks ya'll hahahahha PC good for gaming and thats about it."

first off if you are an engineer and actually use roxio easy cd creator you are a complete idiot. 2nd if you actually think pc's are only good for playing video games you obviously have no understanding of computers and therefore no understanding of audio engineering and the use of computers in such a role. I have both a dual Mac and pc rig and my pc rig completely slaughters the mac. It's your fault you don't know how to build and configure pc's, don't blame it on the platform.

2. "The whole mastering thing is purely subjective though, there's no right or way to do it"

"I would love to sit down with some one (well experienced) during this process (mastering) and take notes, but for now I'll just have to continue to develope my ears, and take criticism from my peers."

again, you first dish out blanket statements (the first quote in part 2) about mastering then later on admit you've never been in a mastering facility. If you have never set foot in a mastering facility you have absolutely no idea what is involved in the process so shut the fuck up and quite pretending.

3. "I love the C4"

"Ive used MK 012's on classicals and they do good, real cool for overheads!"

obviously you have no experience with real mics as these are peices of shit as far as i am concerned. but I also think the neumann km series sucks as far as small diaphgragms go. again proving your audio world is limited to guitar center inventory.

4.(quote in reference to time-aligned monster cables) "well.........the theory basics of it i can understand, but getting down to how its done and what the total effect in spec writing is a bit over my head right now.......im not an electrician, I will try to get this information from some of the big egg heads i know to break it all down."

now earlier in our little ns10 debate (which again proves you are an idiot) you said you have an electrical engineering degree from purdue. yet above you say you are not an electrician and the theory is way above your head. Now I have an engineering pal who does have an electrical engineering degree from purdue! I mentioned the concept of time-aligned cables to he/she and they grasped the concept easily and refuted it. Now dipshit you should understand the concept of measuring a cables capacitance and how that directly relates to cable quality. so please mr. electrical engineer tell me how do you measure a cables capicitance? in the thread i got the quote from you compare blue kiwi cables or whatever the hell they called with monster cables. Again proving your so called "engineering" experience is limited to the guitar center you work at since that is what they carry. Have you ever heard/used mogami cable? yeah, i thought no was your answer. And dipshit, if you are an electrical engineer why in the fuck are you working at guitar center? You should be working at a facility repairing audio gear.

now let's sing nubzez new favorite song one more time, "zallen and boray sitting in a tree . . . ."

you're right and I was wrong, Z. upon rereading, the post you chose to dodge was not stated in the form of a question. i was relying on my memory of the content of the post when i wrote it.

you'll find most people around here bend over backwards to try and respect the fellow members of the board. but certain traits make it tough to get along here - especially when people make absolute pronouncements based on little or no knowledge, or based entirely on hearsay. It's also hard when some people can't seem to differentiate between someone challenging their ideas and a personal attack. That's not to say personal attacks don't happen (umm... I present for your consideration Mr. S. Nubs), but a lot of the time the personality clashes start because someone can't handle someone else critiquing their ideas.

There is nothing wrong with posing any kind of theory or idea that goes against commonly held knowledge. There have been a number of valuable concepts and techniques that i have learned on these boards that ran counter to what I thought to be inutitive. But to be legitimate it should be able to stand up against intense scrutiny. And if you can't handle that kind of scrutiny, and you can't be open minded enough to consider that someone else MIGHT be right and you MIGHT be wrong, you're wasting your time here.

Also, you're probably unaware that your posting style often implies a disrespect to other posters that causes them to get annoyed and respond in kind. I know that's I'm pretty sure you find that statement absurd. But I think if you asked around, you might be surprised. I know that's how I first started to view you in a somewhat negative light. Maybe, (just as an example), your common use of derisive laughing noises was not meant to imply that you find someone's comments so moronic as to be amusing, but that's how it often comes across. I'm sure it's not intentional. I'm sure you're just such a witty guy, that you just crack yourself up. Your own best audience, and all that...

hahahahahah.............

hahahahaha....

you actually took the time to do all that.......hahahaha you're the blue ribbon looser lol.........congrats. Are you going to give an alternative to Roxio for making disc-images, or are you going to give a go-nowhere, uneducated blurt out like you have already said? No where did i ever say i went to school at purdue for an electrical degree.....so once again YOU'RE WRONG RETARD! HAHAHA. Also YOU'RE WRONG again for assuming that I don't know about other brands of cable such as mogami. I have both PC and Mac too and if YOU knew anything about computers you would be able to configure your mac to work properly and you would notice that the mac would kick the PC's ass in the audio/video realm. Sorry chief, but I would take the word of the industry about computer platforms than listen to a know nothing such as yourself sweetnipples, sorry what have you done to prove yourself again? lol hah. Keep stretching the words that people say and you will ruin this once interesting forum, I didn't say the MK012's were the best mics idiot, I said they do good, and are nice. If you can't make them sound good then you probably don't know a damn thing about good mic placement. Of coarse they are going to sound like shit, if you keep sticking them up your ass. While you're at it, pull your head out of there too.

I would like to apologize to everyone about one thing i said before in a NS-10 review, I said they were crap......for the wrong reasons. Ill take that back, they are just a reference monitor and nothing more. And now back to the retard.........

As for what i meant for taking notes for mastering......was to build from what I know already and experimented with.........to add..........to develope.......to have an open mind because learning never stops.....you dumb-shit. I talk to professionals in the business everyday, (the people that make money in this business, not sitting around at their jobs posting 1,000 posts a week) , and what I learn from them far outweighs your worthless words bud. You attacked me for speaking about legitimate concepts and ideas, therefore...........I know that you know shit, and don't want to take the time to learn. I will forever feel sorry for anyone you give advice to. ........oh and because i don't care about ssim delleps words and rammarg, you probably have nothing to reply to mr. little......although I will take your most recent post as the best thing I have heard from you yet, so my hat is off to you at the moment : ), so if you are able to filter out what I have just said, I aimed most of this post at the ones that have "personally" attacked me IE: the consideration of nubs, as you said. I never meant to attack anyone or try to question anyones authority here, but this post has probably changed that........oh well. All I ever offered was legit info, and if you tell me I'm all fucked up then you're telling a lot of professionals, authors, and teachers the same thing so I will say to you gaynubs.......fuck off.......you're ruining the integrity of this forum.

no more replies from me on this, turning off the email notification, you're efforts will be useless to me,.........good day!

nubz, the Banjo Center Messiah just told you...
if you take that now, you'll be taking it for the rest of your life

Zallen you should learn to speak/type with some respect and restraint and learn to think with at least some logic and reason. No offense here but you strike me as very childish, like one of the 14 or 15 year old members we have here on this board. Now i'm not exactly a typical 18 year old, a lot of people my age are like you, even some older people... But i mean still with your way of thinking how do you even function around other people?

"hahahahahah.............

hahahahaha...."

Come on buddy don't be an idiot. Post something that at least attempts to be intelligent, or in some way a clever response.

"hahahaha you're the blue ribbon looser lol.........congrats. Are you going to give an alternative to Roxio for making disc-images, or are you going to give a go-nowhere, uneducated blurt out like you have already said? No where did i ever say i went to school at purdue for an electrical degree.....so once again YOU'RE WRONG RETARD! HAHAHA. "

When you resort to making stupid comments, and when the highlight of your arguement is the use of the word retard, you really need to go back to high school. I mean that isn't even a damn agruement and it's barely a statement. And yea i agree i don't give a fuck about gramar or spelling in my posts, as you can tell by reading them, but i at least try to making things coherent and not be a total asshole to the people i'm seeking advice and knowledge from.

If you're so damn smart go wrap yourself in your time aligned monster cable at GC and flex your production knowledge on your customers who might actually believe that you know what you're talking about.

Again this may seem out of place because i've never had a debate with you and i really have no hard feelings, it just irritates me to see ignorance and that kind of general attitude. For your own sake man, open your eyes and your mind and stop being such a jackass. When you can control yourself and keep things professional, logical, resonable, and organized at all times you can consider yourself a big boy.
