how can I link my yamaha mc1202 mixer to my 424porta studio to use the the extra channels to record with?

Just take the main stereo outs of your Yamaha mixer and plug them into the first two assignable channels of your portastudio and use your 12 channel mixer as a sub mixer for things like a drum kit, or vocals if you prefer the pre's in the Yamaha to the Portastudio's.
Be sure to use the line level inputs on the Portastudio to ensure you don't overload it.
