Ok, I just crawled out from under a rock and discovered the Yamaha EX midi controller guitar. I was in K's Merchandise yesterday, and they had one. I sat down with it for about five minutes and was instantly hooked. I did a quick search and found out this thing has been around for two years or so, feels and looks like a toy, and does wonderful things as a midi controller.

Anyone own one? I may have to sell my keyboard(good riddance).

I had a no-name brand with a plastic toy-like body, a rubbery neck/fret board and six real strings all the same guage that just ran eight or so inches right under your picking hand. It was apparently designed as a toy but had a midi out. I used it for years until the fretboard melted one hot day. I was crushed.

If you've got a line on a Yamaha version, I'd LOVE to know about it! Drop me a PM and fill me in on where you found it and what they wanted for it...

Yes, that's it. There's also a version with real wood body and whammy bar for about $300. All, I can say is it actually was easy to play and expressive as well. You cannot bend notes of course, but that is one of the drawbacks to recording a midi performance from a guitar-synth, i.e. too much information. This requires a light touch and real accuracy. It's probably useless as a guitar instructional tool, but has great potential as a cheap guitar-like midi to computer device.

I haven't used the Yamaha one, but I have used a few others.

I'm a guitar player, and it was kind of frustrating using at first (kind of clunky, and added a lot of notes I didn't play). But for laying down some easy riffs, it's a pretty cool little controller.

Honestly I'd just record a real guitar, since MIDI does not get the little nuances very well with guitars. But for something to play around with, or to use as a simple controller, go for it. Its fun.
