I have purchaced a full DSP Factory system 2x Dsp factory cards and 2 x ax44 I/O units and a AX16AT ADAT I/O. I am running Cubase VST 32 and I can't seem to get the clipping to stop on the AX44 inputs . I've tried cables, mics and have fooled with input gain etc. When I sing, the thing clips. Anyone have any ideas? I am going to purchace the Presonus 8 channel preamp (adat i/o) in the future, but I'd like to do some practice runs first. Any help appreciated.
Thanks

The AX44 has built in (switchable) mic preamps on inputs 1 and 2. If these are enabled (switch pushed to the right) and you are sending line level signal they will distort.

Cool - Thanks! - But I know That ?!

I was aware of this feature and they are selected mic level.
Anyone else- I'm open to ideas!

If you are set to Mic level they will distort unless you are pluging your mic straight into the input (i.e., no external mic peramp).

I am using a mic directly in. I am using an impedance converter adaptor (brand new) It works fine on my mixer downstairs. I've tried two of these converters now. (XLR to 1/4") I'm almost ready to haul my mixer upstairs and wire it up aaaahhhh! It has post fader direct outs (1/4") so I probably could use it. The thought of that is unpleasant considering the unwiring that I'd have to do.

I haven't had an AX44 in years, but they were notorious for poor quality on the mic input. Use your mixer's pres and you should be fine; the converters themselves are OK.

Hey Thanks! Looks like I'll have to haul the mixer uptsairs. Darn! I have the AX16 adat I/O card and I'm looking at a 8 channel pre for it. I was looking at M-Audio, Presonus and lastly Behringer ADA8000.

It's really between the presonus and the m-audio because everyone seems to have really mixed opinions on the ada8000.
So, the next question is which one would you folks recommend? And, are there any more budget minded ones out there worth looking at?
Thanks

I used to have a Presonus Digimax LT and it was OK. I know a guy who likes his Octane. Another option is to score a used Alesis AI3, those usually go for around $200 and have better converters than the AX44, then you can use whatever pres you like.

Also don't forget the DSP card has SPDIF in, so you can score any pre that has SPDIF out.
