yup
i have had it for a month,so far love it
some minor os bugs at first byut none with upgrades
its an impressive machine

awesome! is there any strong limitations youve noticed? other than track count? i know wav export is available now. is there analog inserts for outboard gear? any limitations youve ran into besides os bugs?

YO Bhodgson:

You all need a little English 101.

Other than that, the Yamaha box is good but it is not easy to jump into. Are you one of those engineers who write the manuals?

Only kidding.

bhodgson,

You should really check out the Akia DPS16. For 2 grand you get basically the same thing, just different brand. Yamaha makes great stuff, but Akia has been in the recording end of things a lot longer than Yamaha. They know what their doing. I have played around with a 4416 at a dealer and I can tell you that the DPS16 is a lot easier to get around on. The Akia is also set up to go either 16 or 24 bit and up to 96hz. Killer sound. You can pick up a standard ssci 2 burner for $150.00 and buy the Akia deck with fx's at Shreve Audio. http://www.shreveaudio.com.

Check it out.

Roland has a new 24 track out, but it cost more then my car:D

I believe akai is supposed to have a 24 track coming as well:)

I would wait a little while to check out the new akai before getting the yamaha.

Or you could get the excellent DPS16 and spend the rest on mics, compressors, preamps, monitors, effects, cables, . . . .

the yamaha is a little intimidating at first but easy enough with some hands on practice
if youve used yammie 02r or similar the learning curve is less steep

has 4 omnis out as well as a very flexible patching system
comp/eq on every channel
2 separate onboard efx processors

probably biggest limitation at this point is mediocre wave form editing which i dont really care about

i looked at the akai and its a nice machine but the yamaha
is another notch or 2 up

I've been shopping the Akai dps 16, Roland 1680 and 1880, and the Yamaha. I just bought the yamaha. It is suppose to arrive Thursday. Hope I bought the right one. Seems the learning curve is steeper than the akai, but one probably has more machine when he gets there.

Akai has no onboard midi for auto mixing. The automation in the yamaha was one of the selling points.

cool
you will be happy with the yammie
btw theres a excellent aw4416 group on egroups.com look under yamaha aw4416 all kinds of good info, problem shooting, etc

Trak.

The new Roland 2480 is a 24 track 24 bit recorder. Go check it out at http://www.rolandus.com/home-fst.html It's just the way it's laid out. 16 faders and then the first 8 are doubled up to make the 24 tracks. Not the best way to do it, but roland isn't bad stuff. I had a vs-880ex before I bought my Akia DPS16. Best move I've made in some time.

I unboxed my new AW4416 yesterday afternoon. Didn't leave my little studio until midnight. I think I probably understand about 20% of it so far. It sounds incredibly good. (I'm jumping from tape to digital)

I think I'm going to have some questions about the compressor.

I stand corrected. Now what's the price tag? Is it one of those "if you have to ask" things?

Trak,

I can't find out price. I would guess that it's going to be in the 4 to 5 grand area. That's what Tascam and Mackie are going for. Tascam 4 grand, Mackie 5 grand and that's stock. No frills. Unless your going big time, you can get all you'll ever need out of a 16 track. Remember, you can ping with digital all you want and not lose quality.

hey guys,

thanks for all of your help with this. the yamaha is on layaway.. ive been reading the manual beforehand, and its going to take time to fluently go from point a to point k, and back to point d, but it seems to be soaking in ok. i do have a couple of questions if anyone can answer them..

the mixing layers i get, but i dont understnad the 17-24 channels. i understand its for a expandable 8 channel card, but is the channel layout 17-24 used for returns for auxillarys? or are they used for input channels for bussing to the 16 recordable tracks? or what? or maybe return channels for a seperate hard disk recorder? or all of these possible? i guess: what will i be needing mixing layer 17-24 for if i dont have the expandable my8-ad cards?

oh and the vs2480 i thiiink is supposed to retail for around 6,000 or so. i dont think thats souped up either. so its rather pricy. street price? maybe 5,000? without the extras? the akai 24 looks hot, but ive heard itll be more than the new roland machine. may jsut be rumours, but all i have to go on. thanks guys!

brad

mixing layer 17-24 is for those channels and efx return 1 and 2
i believe you would need a additional card to actually use 17-24

ok, cool. so if its used for the additional channels, then they are used only for bussing purposes, correct? being that the machine is only a 16 track recorder?
thanks for the reply
