XV-88 MIDI "Feedback" Issue ?

I've got a Roland XV-88. It's MIDI out is plugged into an "in" on a MidiSport 4x4 which is connected via USB to my PC running Sonar 2.1.

I've got 2 connections coming out of the 4x4: 1 heading off to my Roland JV-1010 and the other back to the XV-88.

The JV-1010 is working perfectly, but I've got an issue with the XV-88 and I'm out of ideas. The issue is is that as soon as ONE SINGLE Midi Event hits the XV, the MIDI IN and MIDI OUT lights on the 4x4 light up and STAY lit, and no sound comes out of the XV. At that point I can not regain control of the XV unless I power it down and back up - or pull one of the MIDI jacks out. It doesn't matter if the midi event to the VX comes about by a Patch Change in sonar, or by striking a key on the keyboard. As SOON as I send a MIDI event to the XV - those lights come on as if there is a vicious MIDI feedback loop.

I have DISABLED the "LOCAL" settings on the JV-88 so it is not the case where midi is hitting the sound generator both straight from the KeyBoard AND though the MIDI IN.

At this point I don't know what to do. I just want recorded MIDI data in SONAR to play back on the XV as well as the JV-1010.

I would be greatful for ANY, and I mean ANY thoughts or suggestions.

Thank you much,

your problem is probably a midi loopback.. your keyboard will continue to distribute the even back to the computer, and the computer will send it back to the XV which in turn will send it back to the computer... it's not gonna do anything else unless you switch off midi thru in sonar or plug out the midi out on the XV

Chriss,

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately I'm not sure exactly HOW I did it - bit I did get the loop to go away.

MIDI thru ( MIDI ECHO in SONAR ) is still on!

I did do a Factory Reset on the XV-88 and I assume that is was some setting that had gotten of kilter priot to the reset that was causing th problem.

In any case, I'm good for now. If I ever isolate what the cause was I wilil post it up here.

Thanks again for taking the time to reply.

the xv probably has some midi thru function too or similar that was reset with the factory default.. the same thing has happened to my supernova before, it was really a pain...

Just in case anyone else comes across this thread... I had this issue as well. I even know how I fixed it. :)

On the XV-88, click on "Perform", and "System", and then "Edit" (make sure all those buttons are lit, in other words). Then click on the System->Midi edit button (also labeled "Tone Switch" 2 (right under the display) ).

The display should change to "PERFORM MIDI".

On the display, make sure that "Remote" is set to "OFF". ("Remote" is the rightmost option on the first page).

Continue this process for the "Patch" and "Rhythm" modes (that is, hit "Patch", "System" and "Edit" (if "Edit" is not lit) - on that edit screen, all "Remote" settings should be off.) Do the same for Rhythm.

Also, depending on the sequencer/program/whatever you are looping through, you may need to set "Local" to be "Off" so that the tones do not play twice through your keyboard.

HTH.
