I'm not a defrag slackered but I'm wondering..

If you defrag then record and you don't erase anything on the drive before the next session, do you need to defrag the next time?

When you erase items after a defrag then you start to get the small open holes which the software tries to fill with data. But if have not erased anything since your last session shouldn't any new audio data go to the open area of the drive?

I guess I'm having trouble understanding the need to defrag every session if you have a hard drive set aside for audio file use only.

Can anyone shed some light on this?

No not if youve got an audio drive set aside
but a lot of people dont partition there drive, and if is pretty full and holes everywhere the Audio has to write to the gaps and not have a large swath of drive space.....

Hey, rev... I used to get some wack lockups during huge recording sessions, and when I ran SCANDISK it cleared them up. And I THINK that the first thing Defrag does is run scandisk. so maybe thats why you were seeing better performance.

Hi,

I don't know if this will help in your situation, but I would recommend that you check that direct bus mastering is enabled. You might get some more performance (assuming your mobo supports it). Check the 'System overloads' thread elsewhere on this forum,

Be lucky,

hey rev , well i would have to agree with you , i always defrag my audio drive , well both actually , and it seems to work ... i do get a terrible pcav11 error sometimes (anyone help on this), but i dont think thats to do with defraging .....ill agree that its good for performance , but like it was said it can slow down multiple tracks at once , well im not real sure there , so i wont comment ...

If you have onboard video you probably
have onboard sound as well make sure this dissengaged .Do you have any other programs that may conflict. Also maybe get another stick of ram this may help. Also it may help to get rid of any third party media devices etc(programs other than windows media)..
I'm new to the computer world and I hope this helps..The other guys here are far more
