XLR to computer

My band has been doing very low-tech methods of recording, using a sony $15 dynamic mic to go straight to the computer and recording right into a recording program, then doing seperate recording for each instrument. It actually sounds better than complete crap, and with our budget, it has sufficed. I'm now going to buy a SP b1, and I was planning on running that straight to the computer, but I was wondering if using a xlr to 1/4" adapter, then running that through a 1/4" to 1/8" adapter and then using that to plug into the computer would generate any problems

A condensor mic needs:

A) Phantom power (48volts) that your computer does not have to power the mic and

B) A pre-amp to raise the signal up to line-level

Consider getting a small mixer that has phantom power and pre-amps. I've used a Behringer MX-802A for the past couple of years with no problem and they retail now for less than $100.

Rolls MP13 Mini-Mic Preamp

This might do the trick for you. I have several Rolls boxes and they work well.

M-audio pre amp

I use an m-audio "Audio Buddy" and get great results with it. It was about 80 bucks at zzsounds.com....peace!

If the prices are comparable the audio buddy is probably going to sound tons better.

hmm... I was about to buy the rolls preamp because I saw one on ebay for a good price, but according to the manual it only does 36 v of phantom power, and supposedly the sp b1 needs 48 v

-edit- I'm going to get a $50 behringer mixer that has 48 v of phantom power
