The second one will work but personally I'd get a cable with female XLR on one end and male 1/4" TRS plug on the other end. You should be able to get one from about $10 to $30 depending on length and quality of cable/connectors. I know Musicians Friend carries several different brands. Do a search there for " xlr 1/4" TRS ". If you get just an adapter make sure it does not have a transformer in it.

Would there be anything wrong with using a XLR-HiZ cable? What diff would it make?

hey do you guys have any tips for getting XLR to RCA cords?

XLR is balanced and RCA is unbalanced. You usually wouldn't connect those types of jacks. What are you trying to do?

I remember reading in another thread that RI gets into it if theres an adapter. Exactly how big of a dip in quality will there be if I use an adapter? I ask this because the premade ones avalible at MF are Horizons (really cheap) and the Mogamis are simply unaffordable. Better yet, the best question would be, which one will get me better results? Cheap premade XLR-TRS cables or an adapter?

How much of a dip? HMmmmmmmmmmmm , let's see.....ummmmmm, 4, yup a dip in quality of 4

HOSA STX110F 10' TRS-XLR(f) Audio Cable NEW!!

Well I purchased an old DBX 119 off of Ebay and it uses unbalanced RCA connections. However my mics use XLR and my sound card box can use XLR or 1/4" (balanced or unbalanced).

I am trying to figure out the best way to connect these.

Thanks

Okay I found this cable:

and

http://www.topdjgear.com/hosxlrmtorca.html

from Hosa.

And this on Ebay just now: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3708112904&category=23783

Has anyone else seen any better solutions? I want cables that will match up to my Canare / Neutrik made cables that the other three mics will be using that dont cost $50 a piece.

Thanks again.

The mics need to go to a preamp first then the compressor. You can use RCA to 1/4 cables or adapters to go in/out of the compressor.

oh.

uh oh.

So am I screwed then? I have an aardvark direct pro 24/96... it doesnt have any inserts?

For using the compressor while tracking, yes, you are screwed. You would need an external preamp.

Well that really sucks considering I've been really excited about trying out the DBX 119 i just got!

I suppose in order to use it I would have to get an external pre-amp... I know if I connect to my Aardvark with a 1/4" cord I can set the gain to 0 which I hope completely bypases the preamp. I guess I will have to look into getting an external pre-amp.... *grumble*

You can run tracks out of the soundcard thru the compressor and back into the soundcard to rerecord them. You just can't do it while recording.

Ah I see what you mean now. I'm not sure whether it would be better to use the DBX 119 or just a software compressor but I will try to test it out.

I might be able to have use of a Boss BR1180 so I might try to use that for its preamp and then out to the compressor and into my aardvark for recording with some compression.

Thanks for the info again.
