X/Y or ORTF? (details inside)

I've used it and I think it sounds pretty good. Pan your mics harder or softer to widen or narrow the image. I go around 70% (or about 9 and 3 o'clock if you're looking at the pan knobs). That's how the songs in the link in my sig were done.

I like using a spaced pair (with a stereo bar, for accuracy) if you get the overheads positioned right, you will get a nice wide image, and get a good recording of the whole kit....I wouldn't try the spaced pair without a stereo bar though...you could get some bad phase problems.

I would go with spaced pairs similar to bushmaster's setup. Your set is large enough that it will work with minimal phase problems. The dead sound is because of the carpet. If you want more snap from the snared and the toms less dead sounding you need to have a hard, reflective surface beneath the kit.

As far as the kick, how are you micing it? Do you have a vent hole, or is the mic inside the drum with a close reso head?

I have a trick you might want to try.

Please let me know. The 52 is about 3 feet from the porthole where the shockwave ends...wasn't getting very much low end without the space. I only have a small carpet under the drums themselves...It's really concrete under there. You really think it'd sound better with bare concrete? Wow, I'm glad I didn't decide to carpet the basement like I planned...

Do you mean near-coincident pair? spaced pair is two separate stands, X/Y is crossed (coincident) and ORTF(near-coincident) is spaced 7" at an angle of 110 degrees. Which are you referring to?

i'm not talking about x/y or ortf...probably closer to ortf, but not at 110 degrees...more like anywhere from 60-90 degrees apart...i have a stereo bar that is probably 16" long...i attach it to (one) mic stand. I can do any of these configurations with it. I find a lot of times that ortf doesn't have as focused of an image, and x/y only seems to work with certain drum setups. so I guess call it near coincident. I can post some pics and clips if you're interested.
