I just got in two Naiant X-Q mics -- my initial impressions are very good. So far all I've had time to do is hook them up and listen to room noise, talking, and move them around while I'm playing a low quality acoustic guitar -- I'm getting very nice sounds close up at different places up and down the strings, even pretty much over the sound hole. Tons of detail. Also, I'm not noticing any self noise. I've got some older MSH-1s that I like, but they have a decent amount of self noise. These X-Qs sound better, too. Way to go Jon! So far, I'm getting the feeling that I'll be reaching for the SM81s a lot less.
I'm hoping this weekend I'll have a chance to cut some tracks with them. My challenges will be:
1) I love to record stereo tracks for acoustic guitar, but I usually use X-Y with cardioid mics -- what's a good technique for "true" stereo close-micing with omnis like these?
2) I realize I may be beyond help here - My room (OK, my corner) is not so good, and it's not practicable for me to eliminate background noise -- I've got the headphones on now, and I can hear the neighbor's dog's fleas gnashing their teeth (but it's a pleasing mellow sound
- this X-Q really is nice!). That's why I tend to like cardioid mics with good off-axis rejection. Definitely a different game with omnis. I'll do what I can with some rugs, pillows, and other furniture as far as reflections go, but can anyone offer any hints on these classic homerec issues with omnis [other than "build a tracking room, dumA$$ - not that that's not an appropriate answer]?
