It is soooooo bad here in the UK. Half the dance music is driven by ripping off songs. Some are good. There was that one that sampled that Chris Rea riff... most others are just shite.

Even Madonna! "american pie" that wasa dreadful cover. Some covers are good though ..

good covers... Orgy "Blue Monday", Nine Inch Nails and David Bowie "I'm Afraid of Americans" ( best cover ever just about....) and some others.

I like covers that add something to the original or interpret it a different way but these idiots who just buy a sampler and riff off James Brown riffs are just bollox.

OH!! JUST REMEMBERED.

WROST COVER EVER EVER EVER - Sid Vicious covering Sinatra's "My Way"... it is funny though...

Someone mentioned Apocalyptica earlier. It's true that they do only Metallica covers but with only classical instruments. They are really good and infact - Metallica is only flattered by them and they said in an interview that they are very interested in them and watch Apocalypticas progress closely.

Some follow ups on things asked and stated earlier in this thread (I haven't been reading it all through though - I may be back later to comment some more :) )
I'm sad to say that Frank Zappa did a reggae cover on "Stairway to heaven" I love that guy but that cover was just too much - to stay in the family - Dweezil and Achmed zappa made a cover on "Hit me baby one more time" DAM'N that's a good one, I've always had a feeling that song was good, just couldn't figure out why - these guys made it clear to me. Last thing to say : I like the Sex Pistols version of "My way" a lot better than old gangsta blue eyes version - could be because I can't stand crooners

There used to be this band called the Limbomaniacs here in the bay area. They were a pretty good funk/thrash band back when there was "funk/thrash"--early Primus days, et al. Anyway, they had a side band with a different singer called Ted Zeppelin... played only Led Zeppelin and Ted Nugent covers... with an occasional Robin Trower cover thrown in. The thing was, they were really great in capturing the vibe, even though they didn't dress like Zeppelin or look like them, they had the style down. Absolutely liquid John Paul Jones bass lines, and the drummer, Brain, was a master of taste and simplicity. Anyway, they had their whole other "original" project too... So I guess I would argue that there's nothing wrong with a "tribute" band if they're not mocking it. On the other had, busting out with ANY Nugent song after a stirring rendition of "No Quarter" could be considered blasphemous in some cultures.

As far as top-40 "new metal" covering anything, I think it's just a shlocky gimmick for people who can't write their own [catchy] tunes. Anyone ever heard any other Alien Ant Farm songs on the radio or a movie soundtrack? It's one thing to make something interesting out of a cover, like Tori Amos did with "Smells Like Teen Spirit," it's another thing entirely to play a song faster and heavier and think that you've done something creative.

Ok first off I don't know how the country bashing started because trust me country is not leading the way as far as covers go. BTW that Floyd song that was covered was by an absolute NOBODY band not even from here so its really irrelevant. Now lets look at a couple of Country songs covered by R&B or just top 40,

I swear

Don't wanna miss a thing (Written by Diane Warren and cut by Mark Chesnut before Aerosmith.)

The list is just as long and its no Genre more than another they all do it.. Sometimes its because the song inspired them or other times is because of money. I always wanted to cover that song Angel Eyes by the Jeff Healy Band on a project because it was one of my favorite, I just never did. People need to not be so close minded about music... OH and one more HUGE THING

I hear shit like covering a song is ripping off so and so, well folks many times the artist you know that cut the song isnt even the one who wrote it and I am sure the writer isnt going OMFG that sucks they are going to the bank to cash thier check.. I only hope that one of the songs I write gets cut and covered over and over again I don't care if some guy cuts it in Japanese. Music is music and to each thier own... Again its every writers dream to get a multicut and a crossover song and many times the song is repitched to a different market with that intent. And if you wanna hear my idea of a lame cover its Metallica covering Turn the Page.. But I don't feel that strongly about it and lots of people liked it, I just turn the station.... Peace ;-)

That's them - thanks Darrin - the Fart Corporation. How to quantize a rock classic to death

The only reason to "cover it" is to capitalize on its previous success and get in on the cash grab.

Of course, Bruce! It's all about money.

If you didn't want to make money as a musician-then you could do it all for free and pay for everything out of pocket, Otherwise, it's a business, and sadly musical creativity plays a very little part in it.
The masses are stupid.
The Evidence:

Britney Spears
N Stink
Backdoor Boys
Limp Wristed
Papa Cricketbug

and the list goes on.

The whole sampling thing is sick to me. Lately I've heard samples of stuff that's already been sampled! Hell, in 10 years nobody will remember who recorded the original sample!

It ain't just the greed it's the lack of art!

I probably shouldn't say this as everyone is entitled to their musical taste, but the problem I have with all this sampled stuff is it is soooooooooo boring! I am not that keen on hip hop and rap at the best of times, but nearly every song I've heard where the band has created the backing themselves is a million times more interesting than sample based stuff!

Its funny how life seems to have common threads. I was over at artistpro.com reading a commentary by Bob Welch, and he made points about the MTV generation spawning Producers, A&R and Musicians that lack creativity. The only remakes/covers I like are the ones the the G3 crew did of" Red House and
My Guitar Wants to Kill Your Momma" Satriani, Vai and Johnson really did a nice job, then again how could they not. I think alot of it comes from the fact that in the old days if you wanted to learn something, you sat down and transcribed it, now days you just sample it from a HariKari machine and your done. You havent really learned anything musically. Jurassic Park character Dr Ian Malcolm made the interesting remark about genetic manipulation ,something about not having the proper respect because you didn't do anything to atain the knowledge and standing on the shoulders of giants. Any similarities to that to the musical industry as a whole? Ask Steve Vai why he created Favored Nations records.

Peace,
Dennis

I have no problem with someone recording a cover provided they do an original twist to it, or a humorous version. The Pat Boone rock album was definately for laughs, although I'm not sure if he actually sold any.
My favorite take off was "Stairway to Gilligans Island", using the music from Stairway to Heaven (and a Plant sound-alike) with the words from the Gilligans Island theme. The scary thing was that it fit PERFECTLY.....

whats the big deal about bands doing covers...whether they are great or total crap? its just an artists interpatation of another artists piece of work, ain't know big deal. hell, im a lynyrd skynyrd fan and alot of fans actually didn't think anyone but ronnie van zant should be able to sing freebird....like its the holy grail or something...gimme a break. with this line of thinking the beatles wouldn't have done "roll over beatovon" and "long tall sally"....elvis wouldn't have covered "hound dog" and blue swuade shoes"......srv wouldn't have touched "little wing" and vodoo chile (slight return)" ...wouldn't have the allman bros great cover of "stormy monday" or geoge thoroughgoods "move on over".....not to mention jerry lee lewis's cover of "whole lotta shakin' goin' on"
you have to take the good with the bad.....and for the record: any major lable recording stars that want to cover any of my tunes are more than welcome......even boy george (ha ha ha...im puking right now)

oh..and i forgot to mention that in my opinion, 2 of the greatest moments in rock and roll are covers....jimi's cover of "wild thing" at monteray when he burnt his strat...and jimi's cover of "the star spangled banner" at woodstock ( probably gone down in history as the cover that got the most flack and praise at the same time)
guess you can tell im a henrix fan

I don't give a damn if bands cover songs or not... great if they do and can add a fresh new spin on it -- it's when a great song gets butchered as a cash grab that bothers me.

Bruce

Hey Jimistone

Like I said before, if you're doing something new with it, more power to you. SRVs Little Wing was a whole new spin on Jimi's. They are both worth listening to. But can you really say the same about most of the stuff that's being churned out?
