Okay, since the country scene is now doing Pink Floyd. How about a heavy metal cover of "Your Cheatin' Heart?" Who wants to sign up to start tracking??

"Money" may sound good if the cousin lover does it right.

Axel Rose sings "stand by your man".
It could fly.

Heh, get Frank Zappa's "the best band you've never heard in your life" and listen to his covers of "Purple Haze", "Sunshine of your Love", and "Stairway to Heaven". You will either be rolling around in laughter or throwing your CD player out the window!:)

"The only reason to "cover it" is to capitalize on its previous success and get in on the cash grab."...Bruce The Married

Are you referring to a lack of integrity? In the music business?
What? - someone covered my song and got a platinum crossover hit? Damn, my integrity won't allow me to colect on the royalties!
Coming soon....just in time for Christmas - "White Wedding" by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir!

Come on guys. Didn't Zeppelin cover a few classic Willie Dixon songs? Hendrix covered Dylan. I'm sure the list of great covers could go on and on.

I'm not saying the ones mentioned in this thread are necessarily any good, but it's not as if covering a tune is an inherently evil deed.

I Knew there was a reason to cancel my cable tv and turn off the radio!

To cover a Pink Floyd tune and not ruin it in the process is a losing battle. Its like polishing a
diamond with used toilet paper. Anyways, Ive never really been a fan of covers, they're like a musical sequel where none of the actors returned.

Peace,

Dennis

I agree... I was suggesting that at all.... if a band can offer something new with a new take on a cover, great! But when it's simply a hack job (more like a slasher job in this latest PF one...) you really gotta wonder what the point is........

Er, um.... Hey Wil... didja just walk-in in the middle of this thread?? That was my point all along!!! ;)

:D

To put this discussion in historical context, the best/worst "cover story" of all time was Pat Boone's cover of Little Richard's "Tutti Fruiti" in the 50's. At that time a lot of record stores would not carry songs by black artists, so when a song by a black artist became popular a white artist would immediately cover it and the white-owned store would sell that recording instead.

Boone's cover was so horrible that white kids refused to buy it, and demanded Little Richard's version. After that many record stores that had previouslty refused finally began carrying records by popular black artists.

At least that's how my old professor described it...

if it's done well i don't mind a cover...

for instance, alien ant farm's remake of michael jackson's smooth criminal is just tongue in cheek enough to work.
besides, the remakes and hip-hop sampling is not much different than the way white artist use to rip black blues riffs in the early days of rock. although, i must admit that i'd rather listen to keith richards doing a buddy guy "Inspired" riff than listen to 90% of the remakes, and hip-hop samplers.

IMHO:

If you cover someone else's song and you keep it the same - same instruments, same beat, same backing vocals, same phrasing then shame on you! it's the pits, it's feeble, it's theft of creativity, artistry etc.

If you love a song and come up with a whole new way of treating it, new tempo, new phrasing, new mix - if you put some new creativity into it then good for you. It gets more mileage out of a great song.

I for one will try to judge the new version (as far as you can if you've heard the old one) on its musical quality.

Someone mentioned Hendrix - his version of All along the watchtower stand right beside Dylan's. It is one heavy heavy track!

Truck on

Has anybody heard the version of "Rock You Like A Hurricane" on
the Harp ?

Remakes

Since country has come to an all time high on the list of listeners/popularity.
When country stars did the Eagles tribute...>gag<...
Alan Jackson...mercury blues...the list is amazing.
I am so sick of Uncle Garth, his alter ego and shit. I don't care if I ever hear his name again. Talk about over exposure...

Is there any old country tunes that could be redone say in a metallica style to rub in their face...Or even better get Marilyn Manson to redo one...ha ha ha...

I played in a band recently and redid These Boots by Nancy Sinatra... punk style...It was a blast...we had fun doing it.
I wish we would have recorded it...

Gidman:D

The Dead Kennedys did a great job on "Take this job and shove it", and "Viva Las Vegas". I thought it was the perfect ending to Fear and Loathing when the played that last one during the credits.

And the Circle Jerks "Golden Shower of Hits".......

Or how about Travis' accoustic treatment of Hit Me Baby One More Time?

Just listen to any Pinkerton and Bowden album and you will see what remakes are supposed to sound like.

Rwhite

I seem to recall a recent alblem By Pat Boone called "No More Mr. Nice Guy" which should cement his hold on worst cover artist of all time.

This guy butchered all of the Hard rock classics.

Its good for a laugh though.

Anyone remember who those idiots were who did a cover of Stairway to heaven a few years ago?
Talk about wasted effort!
