WTF? A Charvel for $2600

Well, first off, that is the MSRP probably, so more realistically it will be like $2k +/-.

But more importantly, Bob Taylor (or whatever his firstname is) made a guitar out of scrap pine taken from old pallets. It supposedly sounds amazing.

I think they need to move the decimal point over one space to the left [$260.00].

The pallet guitar was a demonstration that superior and exact construction techniques in an acoustic guitar are as, or more, important as the choice of wood. It really has no relation to the discussion of basswood electric solid body guitars.

Many shredder guitars are basswood, the expensice Vai and Satch guitars are, as are several others. The new Charvels are US made again and are kind of custom recreations of the 80's stuff they becaues known for. I didn't look at the link, but the EVH endorsement on these new ones is what is driving the price up. If it's not your thing, it's not your thing. If it is, it is.

But this thread is about, and I quote, "How can a guitar like this made out of Basswood sale for $2600?"

I think it was a valid comparison.

Back when Charvel was making the custom Frankenstien guitars for Eddie it was all one of a kind...everyone was different...I have one from that era that originaly was 1600 bucks...the mass produced stuff that came later with the less expensive parts were cheaper...but good stuff to start from If you liked adding Pickups and rewiring.

And the review goes like this... (Hey, I didn;t write this stuff...)

This is pretty much the closest you will ever find to eddie's actual guitar. The only difference is that Charvel improved it(IMO),I think this product might not last just because it's a limited edition, but if it was going to be available for a while I think that it would definatley sell.Naturaly of course, because it was crafted by the best guitar player of all time. There are no bad qualities on this guitar. If you're an evh freak like me,then you'll love this guitar and know that it's the best out there for us Van Halen fanatics!the overall quality is at a five

The only flaw this product has is that it's a little over-priced.I would say this guitar should cost around $1,800 to $2,000.It doesn't matter to me though,I'd still buy it anyway because everything else is so impeckable.

SOUND:
THIS IS THE BEST PART ABOUT THIS GUITAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!it sounds great with fuzz, dunlop mxr evh phase 90 phase shifter, crybaby wah, delay, whammy, peavey or marshall amps.anything would sound good with this guitar.the sound is very warm and has a nice brown bite!

How They Use It: I depend on it for my job

Experience With It: Heard/used it once

You All Are Missing the Point

Want an EVH guitar? Then buy a kit or some parts, and build your own, with your own favorite paint job, pickups, tremolo system, woods, fingerboard, etc. After all, isn't that what Eddie did?

I guarantee if you tried hard enough you could build and finish a guitar just as good as this Charvel for at least half the street price.

JMHO.

It breaks my heart to see those $200 Charvels in the music store. I bought a Model 6 back in the '80s for $700 and it rocks. The neck (through the body) is one of the fastest that I've ever played.

I still have my model 5 that I bought brand new for $600 back in the 80s. It also has a neck-through body. There is no way that a Basswood guitar with a bolt-on neck is worth more than about $300-$400 even with a pretty paint job. You can put lipstick and lingerie on a monkey but she won't make playmate of the month.

you pay $2000 for the "EVH" name thats been attached to it....like those designer clothes that go for $5000 for a stupid bra or bowtie

I've got a Jackson Soloist that I had made out the Custom shop in 94', that puppy cost me around 1800.00 back then, but it's the fastest playing guitar I've every played or had(have).

You can build the ultimate guitar for around 1500 bucks........so anything over that you're either paying for cosmetics which don't effect the tone or sound (in a good way that is, those things usually take away from the over all sound and tone), or paying for "Hype" - Like some signature modle or endorsment deal.........again, no upgrade in sound or tone.

Just my 2 cents. :)
