Functionally obsessed.
Hey folks,

I've been soldering like a madman lately... hence my absence from the board. It's good to be back!

I'm curious to know if anyone has any spare 1/4" 10.5" 3m/scotch precision reels that they'd like to sell. I know that some batches of 250 and most 996 tapes came with these reels (gold reels, too... very pretty) but there are others that I'm unaware of. I could go with either gold or white... I just want nice reels.

Anybody have any? Please let me know!

Thanks!
Jeff

Just thought I'd bump this, because I'm still in the market.

What other 1/4" precision reels are out there? Where may I buy some?

REEL DREAMS-Precision Gold anodized NAB reels..............

Hello Sir;

Saw your request. I have made for me, and offer for sale, new NAB GOLD anodized 'Preciosion' 10.5" x 0.25" 6-screw hub REELS, in a white storage box. Unlike others sold on the net, These have 0.90" thick flanges. A pair would make a beautiful addition to any reel to reel deck. They're a bit costly to manufacture. Retail at: $160.00 each. Free shipping to USA/Canada.

You do mean 6 screw precision reels right?

Can you wait about 90 days?

What have you been soldering- 48 sound cards?

REEL DREAMS ..... "Precision" NAB reels.....

I sell NEW Gold anodized Precision NAB type reels.....There is a reason the word 'Precision' is used in discribing NAB type reels. So don't be fooled by others who use that word. (ex: Scotch gold 996 reels are NOT precision reels as the thickness isn't their, although they used 6-screw hubs). On Precision reels, the Flanges are 0.90" thick vs standard 0.60" thick as used on regular NAB reel flanges. The Hub is a 6-screw type with NO slot for inserting the tape end. This is so that there is no 'bump' in the tape as it spools on the reels. My reels are more costly to manufacture because Gold (or any color) anodizing costs money!
If interested, e-mail me and I'll send photos. Price $140.00 each.

Jeff, it seems I still have 4 unused reels of 1/4" 996 on the gold reels in the nice plastic cases. Send me a PM if you are interested.

BTW, as far as I'm concerned, a "precision" reel is one of the 6-hole types where the flange doesn't go all the way in to the center of the hub, and the plastic hub itself touches the hub adapter and the reel table, rather than having the metal flanges cover the entire hub and come in contact with adapter and reel table.

My EMTEC stock also has reels of this "precision" type, and I think that is typical of BASF and EMTEC stock, since it was used extensively in Europe. In Europe, of course, many machines just run with the tape on these hubs and flanges aren't used at all.

The actual thickness of the metal flange is a minor detail to me, since it shouldn't affect tape alignment height. All such "precision" reels can be used without flanges, if desired, since the height of the hub center off the reel tables (where the tape pack should center if properly aligned with the guides and heads) is determined by the hubs alone, with no need for flanges to align the tape properly. Obviously, opinions vary on what constitutes a "precision" reel.

Cheers,

Otto
