Well, I have to give him this, he is a lot more musical than a lot of guys playing those monstrosities, but his dynamics suck. No control, and the level is all over the place. It is guys like that that started the whole "gotta compress the bass" thing.

Why is it, by the way, that four string guys have there dynamics down so much better, anyway"

My opinion is that anything over a 6-string bass is just crazy!

That may be because he is playing the music from Super Mario Bros., a Nintendo game from the late 80s.

Yeah, but I listened to some of his other stuff too. Some of it is just as ridiculous as you would expect, but there are a few pieces which are not that bad.

Believe me, I am familiar with Super Mario Bros. Far too familiar, actually. Actually, the only reason I am awake right now is because I made the mistake of playing Civ 3 last night.

I think that what he is doing is quite interesting. I noticed some of that lack of dynamic control too, but it didn't detract from what obviously takes tremendous effort on this Jean Baudin's part. The stuff he uploaded to myspace.com is much cleaner (perhaps because he employed compression).

In any case, his playing held my interest, bore repeat listening and didn't make me grimace or wince even once.

I will probably look into this Nuclear Rabbit project that he was in because I'm curious now.

Wow, it's amazing for me to see this post because this is a guy who has been playing in small San Francisco Bay Area bands for many many years. I used to love his band Element of Suprise and would go see them play locally a lot. Then they made a terrible second album and broke up. He reformed his old band Nuclear Rabbit, which was much more popular years before when they were first together. He ACTUALLY plays a 9-string bass which he had customed made for himself. The guy was great to see play live, and in Element of Suprise, the guitarist played the rhythm parts usually. It's great to see the bassist be the lead instrument in a rock band.

Man-o-War.... the bass player is the lead guitarist. He plays a 4-string picolo bass his tech custom built for him. Monster chops....

I used to see Nuclear Rabbit play in Sacramento now and then. I think their original guitarist left to move to Hawaii some years ago before EOS formed.

Nuclear Rabbit and EOS are very different bands.
 
I've seen guitarists do a much worse job with that Mario Bro's thing. How many people have to play that before it's overdone anyway. I thought that was over with in the 80's. At any rate dynamics are difficult to maintain when your doing strictly two handed tapping on a bass. Ya need mighty strong fingers to make it work. I commend the guy just for making it thru without any obvious mistakes.
 
wow, I thought the guy in klos lonely boys was crazy by doing a 6 string. I have tried a 6 string bass up at the 12th fret the neck is bigger than my hand! A 12 string would be insane.
 
When I had a 7-string, I looked upon these ERB's as different types of instruments. When playing those, you weren't playing bass, you're playing a ERB; an animal as different from a bass as a keyboard. In fact, I wanted to start a band with a ERB and a bassist. Unfortunately, I sucked at ERB and no once else I knew knew what the hell I was talking about. So, I sold it.

Actually, a 12-string bass can be one of two setups: 4 string with 2 subs per string, or doubled 6. I think most people would prefer the 4-string. I had a hard enough time with a normal 6-string (and figured out that I rarely ever used the C string and went back to 5).
