Nice? Definitely. To show it off or display it would be awesome. To use it? Not so sure. Maintenance to the max, power hungry, hot. I am in no way dogging it, I think it is an awesome piece, but in the most practical of terms the performance of that machine was surpassed with "modern" tape machines decades ago.

Oh, pretty! I bet that machine sounds wonderful. I didn't realize those were 1" tape! Don't ask me how I didn't know that. Wow! They want so much money for it though. I guess it's a piece of history as well as a tape machine and so the price goes up. Plus, the condition looks outrageously good for it's age.

Yeah!...

Condition is incredibly good. It also comes with replacement tubes, a roll of tape & a NOS replacement headstack. Studers were always top dollar high end machines. Depreciation is probably less than other decks. It may sound phenomenal. Closing price was appreciably high. Probably a good deal for someone, whether for historical value or... what? That was a very, very motivated buyer! Remember, it's only "4" tracks.

Paul McCartney recorded the "McCartney" album on that kind of recorder.

Actually from a commercial standpoint, a pro studio could make their $28K back in a matter of months since I'm sure there are a lot of bands that would want to sound like The Beatles... and not many studios around that still have the J37.

If you are the studio around town that has 'The Beatles recording equipment' then I'm sure you're going to get a lot of customers.

I could see that being true if you have the meters on your mixer calibrated properly to the recorder but they still might come in handy during the calibration process, yes?
