would like recommendations

I mixed this using cubase 2. all the single parts vocals,drums,bass,guitar1,guitar2 were run through the compressor set with the default for each instrument. The vocals are also run through a little reverb.

What would you do to make this better?
 
Where to start?

Start by telling everyone you made a horrid cover that has too many problems to fix.
 
I can't get beyond the vocals. The singer isn't on key... in fact he's slightly flat. The only good thing about it is that's he's consistantly flat throughout.
I'm sorry, but I could only listen through the first chorus....

Rokket - Thanks for the constructive critisizm. Aside from him being flat - which I know is hard to ignore - what needs to change in the mix - what would you do?
 
It's not a mix problem, there are performance issues galore.

Why not try an original? I never understand people who do covers with nothing to add to the song. You basically just insulted the song you like so much by destroying it.

Anyhow, get offended if you like but it sucks hardcore.
 
Maybe so but really it's needs retracking just as badly. Point is, why chase a published tune?
You are gonna be a lot better off trying your hand at writing.

Agreed.

I don't understand why, if he knows the entire song is sung flat, why that's not the first thing he would work on rather than ask for mix comments. I was always under the assumption that mixing happens AFTER tracking is complete. Why is everyone in such a big hurry. That's the beauty of home recording. You can take as long as you need to make sure the performances are perfect.
 
I am sorry I made assumptions when I made the post.

I am in a band that is trying to create a demo CD. That is not me singing.

I am still trying to figure out what needs to be tuned in the mixing department.

Not that I am defending our group but...... that was the 3rd run through of that tune. Prior to that we had never played it before. I recorded it during practice.

Why not do covers? Most bands doing their own tunes meet lukewarm receptions, But when you do covers(and do them well) People can relate to the songs because they know them and the feedback in my personal experience is much more positive, which means repeat bookings. In this case, Brookman is trying to create a demo, presumably to get bar bookings, so I think covers are the best way in, after that you can mix in originals, and keep the crowd into it.
As far as the mix, yea, the vocals are a problem, bottom endBass and kick washes out, Guitars are a little over the top. Musically the song is there-with a little polish.
