Would I see an improvement in using a Focusrite pro 24 dsp?

Well I have been wrestling around with getting a new interface. First I thought about getting into some of the Meek gear such as the OneQ but since hearing some of the focusrite gear on youtube I must say it sounds really good. I currently use an old omni-studio. Will I tell a good difference between the omni-studio and let's say a Focusrite pro 24 DSP? This is going to be for vocals mostly. I feel I have a good mic in the Heil PR-30. Have KRK monitors so I feel I am pretty good there:) Let me know what you think. I can't find much on the Meek Stuff on youtube to compare sound!

If you're just gonna do vocals, I'd guess a good preamp would be more useful than a whole new interface.

I have the focusrite saffire pro 40 (not sure how it compares to the 24), and the pres on it are good...not great, but very usable and definitely not gonna hold back your recordings.

I also normally don't use them, and use other preamps. I really like the GAP Pre-73 ($300) for vocals and acoustic guitars. With that you'll hear a significant improvement over stock pres in almost any interface.

Aaron thank you friend. Would you say the pre's in the saffire are as good or better than the DMP3? Which supposedly are a step up from the DMP2 in my omni studio.

I had a DMP3 years ago. I got a RNP pretty early on and never used the DMP3 again. So as I remember, I'd say the pres in the saffire pro 40 are on par with the DMP3. I like the pres on saffire, and they have never been the weakest link in a recording I've made.

I'd recommend not getting an interface based on the pres, but rather based on how many ins/outs you might one day need. The pres in most are pretty similar, as long the interfaces are in the same price range. I'd guess the saffire 24 will have better pres than what you have because it's a step up.

Well....believe I'll give the GAP a go. What is the difference between the pre-73 and the deluxe pre73?

You should post a clip. That's probably the best way to get an idea of whether a new pre will help you or not.

I haven't used the deluxe, but it has a HPF, output attenuator (so you can push it hotter without clipping your DAW), improved grounding and power supply for lower noise, and an insert jack for EQs and stuff.

Doesn't seem like a huge improvement, but for some it may be the difference they're after.

but, having that insert for the EQ-73 does look pretty cool!

You can hear a clip here. The track is a backing track.

I listened to Goliath. It's pretty well recorded, played and mixed. The quality of the clip was obviously affected by the low res mp3 - so it's kind of hard to judge in that sense. Better converters in the price range we are talking about is is not normally a night and day difference. The only reason I replied is that I use a PRO 24. I doubt you are gonna get a big quality bump out of it after listening to your stuff - but if you post a higher res version I can give it another listen.

I find the Focusrite Saffire Pro 24 DSP to be an excellent interface. I preferred the pres on the Saffire a little more to the DMP3. What interface are you using at the moment?
If I were looking to buy a new outboard pre I would look at :-

Focusrite ISA One digital
True Systems P-Solo
Grace M101
Audient Mico
DAV BG1u

I am taking it your name is Richard:) Man you play quite well! Was the clips on your site of the lady vocals done through the Pro 24? Also noticed you had the liquid pre, so I'm gonna guess it would have been more through it instead. Do you play in professional studios? If you are close I know my families professional studio would use you:) Hard to come by paino players who read and know music. Your timing is great....which is another thing that is hard to find these days:) lol

Hi,

Thanks for the kind words! The vocal clips on my site are quite old and done before I bought the Pro 24 DSP.

My Baby Just Cares was recorded with a Studio Projects B1 into an M-Audio Tampa preamp.

Amazing Grace was recorded again with the Studio Projects B1 into an SPL Goldmike.

Got Your Love was recorded with an AKG Solidtube into a Focusrite ISA One.

The first two songs were recorded at my place and the third track was recorded at a different studio.

The Liquid Channel is new here and don't have any clips of it in action yet. It is a great sounding preamp though! I also bought my ISA One and UA Solo 610 since those recordings were done along with most of my current gear.

I do work in various studios and do sessions for various projects. Where is your families studio?

Studio is in Fort Gay, Wv. Been in busines for 20 plus years. Genre is mostly bluegrass with grammy artist to the likes of Don Rigsby. Still there's country and gospel artist as well which is where skill such as yourself could find work. A lot of soundtracks are done which would keep a good paino player busy:) The website is down right now or I would send you that way:) Focusrite ISA, is it a pretty good pre?

I'm based in the UK but could record some piano tracks and email them to the studio if that would be of use? I use the Garritan Steinway Professional edition, Alicia Keys Piano, True Pianos 1.9 and another piano vst which I'm beta testing at the moment. I also have the Scarbee Rhodes, Wurlitzer and Clavinet along with GSI's VB3 Hammond, Mr Ray Rhodes and Mr Tramp Wurlitzer piano vsts. I quite often record piano/keys parts here and email them to various studios
