Part 4720981 coming soon!
I've been thinking lately about what to do with all the video I have of constructing my studio. We have something like 22 tapes, which works out to roughly 20 hours of video. Through the years of building (6 years to be exact) I've always felt it would be cool to edit it all down to something you could watch in one or two sittings, but I've always wondered what angle to take with it. Should it be more entertaining than informative? Or would informative over entertaining be better?

Just the other day I was thinking about how great this and other forums are for learning about studio construction, and recently someone asked the question, "Why aren't there any shows on TV about studio construction?" And it got me thinking, what if I edited my videos into short 15 minute long "episodes" and actually used them to educate people? I could narrate them and make sure I point out anything I did that was done incorrectly and explain how to correctly do it. Each episode would cover different subjects. The cool thing is, I think I have enough video and pictures to cover any subject we could come up with.

Ethan's video on treating control rooms with bass traps changed my life. :) I really feel that videos are a great way for people to learn this stuff, and if I can give something to the community like that, I am all for it. I'm wondering if anyone else thinks this is a good idea. If so, we should come up with what I would want to cover in each episode.

I won't be able to get to any of this until my studio is actually done being built and it's treated, which should be this year. But the way I look at it is, that gives us plenty of time to come up with all the subjects. And when I narrate the videos I want to make sure I'm explaining all the theories correctly, so we'll want to come up with a script.

Can you get Tim Allen and Richard Carn to present it? That would be cool

Sonic, that´s a great idea, a video could help to understand how to do it, reading all the information you can find in forums and magazines just explain a specific situation, but a video is a whole different story. The same happens with instructional videos, I play drums and learned a lot from articles, but when I bought 1 or 2 great videos from great drummers, you have another approach.
BTW where I can find Ethan´s video??.

Thanks
TS

www.realtraps.com/videos Watch the first one on treating control rooms.

Yeah I can see if I can get a hold of Tim Allen. :) Maybe I could find that girl too, what was her name?

I agree though, you can learn a lot from reading, but I'm much more of a visual guy. There are obviously people who can learn everything they'll ever need from reading, but there are a lot of people like me who learn better from seeing things.

Sounds like a great idea, my one suggestion is brevity = your friend.

Edit it down to 45 mintues ro so fo really relavant stuff and people will enjoy it greatly.

Daav

Well I was actually thinking some of the segments might only be a couple minutes long. There'd obviously be some longer ones. One thing I've learned over the last few years is how to edit something that's pretty darn boring to watch raw into something that's very effective and entertaining. I think I can do this. Thanks for the advice though, that's definitely something to keep in mind. This will definitely be something for the "high speeders". Dial-up need not apply. :)

Oh you're gonna do it over the internet? I was thinking you'd make a DVD or something. There's probably a market. I know I'd be interested

Yeah I was thinking I'd offer them right over the internet. Hopefully I'd get some donations to help out with the added bandwidth demand. But a DVD might be cool too. I could sell them, that might help out the dial-up users. I could do both. I wouldn't be doing it to make money, I just think it would help people out.

Help people out AND make money. Hmm. Interesting concept. I like it

Which is why I want to make sure I get all the sience in the narration correct. I don't want to do with HGTV did and put false information out there.

Great idea. Would you be charging a fee to watch these?

Nah, I'd be offering them for free, donations accepted.

But like I said in my previous post, if there seems to be a market for selling the videos on DVD I'll do that too through an eBay store.

Just saw your latest pick over on the "Show me your studio" thread.
Looks great!
Count me in.

I also have a thread here with a bunch of more new pics from Easter weekend. It's coming together. :) The latest pictures are on the second page.

Sonic, that looks amazing. You seem to really know what you are doing, it will be amazing for sure. Keep up the pictures!!!

I had actually used a miniDV camcorder and recorded the construction of my "home" studio. It was my intention to do the exact same thing, offering a DVD for $20 or download for free, lower res of course.

But alas, after transferring everything to a 250gig firewire drive I bought for this purpose, it died and I had already recorded car projects on top of the tape.

I think it's an *excellent* idea.

Wow! That sucks that you lost it allllllll... oh I'd die. I've got 22 tapes of us acting like idiots down here building for 6 years. :D haha. That's why you always keep the originals!

Cool that you think it's a good idea. Yeah I'll offer the downloads as low-res. If the bandwidth starts to get too much I'll have to push for more donations. And I'll offer the ultra high quality versions on DVD that people can buy. I have to work out all those details as of yet.

In the end, if the videos aren't totally informative, and if all the information in them isn't 100% accurate, if nothing else I know they'll be extremely entertaining for anyone who's built a home studio.

Just had a look at your pics in your other topic and I can only say that I was blown away by the scale of your project. Must make you feel proud to have a studio like that :D When will it be finished?

And yeah, a video would be a great idea...
