Would anyone be interested in a R&B\Rap mix contest?

Spent a couple hours doing editing on this... I don't know if everyone's copy has them, but there are some encoding errors in a couple of the vocal tracks... I'm pretty sure everyone's copy does, because one particular error shows up in each chorus... Lead vox... Not able to bring up PT and look for the exact time and lyrics...

Either way, I did some ProTooling to get rid of them (pencil/copies/crossfades)....

I did the most painstaking vocal fades I've ever done... NO MORE HEADPHONE BLEED.. Woohoo.. And I don't have to use a gate...

I want to mix at the studio.. Just hope to have find an open slot for this soon....

Cool track.. What mic did you use on the vocals?

The mics used where a U47 (rap vox) & U87 (hook), through a distressor into the SSL.

P.S. I'm gonna see if I can convince one the bands I hang with to do a remix of sorts... The drummer's style is very John Bonham... We'll see..

I've been thinkin' about this... Where did the encoding errors come from, with such high quality gear?

I mean they sound GREAT! Just though it was odd to find 2 separate errors so easily...

The only thing in the room for ad conversion straight to my cpu was my fast track pro... :o

So many great mixes, guys. Alot of different approaches, and all interesting.

A couple of things I find in general (and it doesn't apply to all the mixes):

The drums can be bigger (But remember who typed that...I like drums :) )

Rap vocals should be drier, in my opinion. Maybe a quick doubling, but a delay sounds weird.

Also, and this is a nit pick....When the first rap comes in, nobody is fading out the melody vocals and they seem to stumble on each other.

Just a few observations....I'm totally impressed by everyone's mixing skills.

I caught what your saying when listen to the song again. It's not perfect but nothing ever is. I think you're fixating :D ;)

I cleaned things up a bit, and I think it's a lot closer - still need to work on the second verse, but I'm gonna sit on it a bit until I figure out what to do.



Any comments? Is it too dark? I was going for a smooth sound, but it may not be bright enough now.

Damn it! I thought my right ear was all screwed up but the gain knob on the back of my monitor has been tweeked for a couple weeks it looks like.
Now I have to go threw and remix the vocals on this :eek:

I don't know why I didn't check that before :mad: I just thought I had a plugged ear. I can hear the panned vocals on this are to the right. I must have strung a cord back there that drug across the knob.


Well now I have something to do :o

My first version should be showing up on my myspace page in lil while.. It has to "process"...

It doesn't look like we're gonna have time to do the remix I mentioned...

My version isn't nearly as loud.... I'll look into a better "mastering" scheme for it asap...

Lemme know what you think peeps...

Edit.. Myspace's player is dumb... I'll try to get the 320 out tomorrow..
 
Hoping this is my last mix. Since I had to go back in I did a couple small nit pick things while I was at it.

Only a couple things I'm not happy with in the second verse, but other than that I'm pretty happy.

Comments? Critiques? Anything??????

Never done anything like this before, so I haven't offered any opinions on the other mixes.

Thanks a lot! I hope to revise before it's all over.. I've been using R. Kelly's "Forever More" as a reference... Got some work to do yet...

Yeah.. The biggest difference I hear from mine to R. Kelly is my kick...

We've been recording metal for the last couple weeks.. So my kick came out all metal style..

:p

Edit:Not to mention mixing in headphones that are overly bright.. Sony MDR-7506
 
So is there an established end date on this contest yet? Just in case I should get off my ass and fix my nit's:)
