Worst Singer EVER

Bob Dylan is one of the greatest singers of our time. He has even won various awards (specifically for singing) to further back that up.

His voice is rough and edgy, Woody Guthrie folk like, but that's the "gravel in your gut" "hard road travelled" spirit of America coming out in him. He has Robert Johnson and Hand Williams Sr. rolled into one.

If I were to choose a worst :

Any "white trash" "I feel sorry for my self" bands.... for example, Nickleback, Creed, Theroy of a Dead man, etc.

that dork from korn

and defiantely Creed.

i think the singer from the misfits is good. he's also the singer of danzig and has an even more powerful voice with them.

korns singer is also quite unique.

as far as worst, im going with axl rose, and ashley simpson probably. ja-rule, busta rhymes, and alot of rappers that try to sing, and the guy from hoobastank too. brandon boyd, the lead singer of incubus is similar...but he can actually sing great.

it depends on your deffinition of singing. a previous poster said geddy lee. i disagree, his style was quite unique and was one of the reasons rush was so popular.

thats like me saying the singer of led zepplin sucks just because i dont like his voice (because i dont)...even though his voice is famous world wide.

i can't believe nobody has mentioned Billy Corgan, since he's the worst singer EVER.

A band I was in a few years ago recorded with Terry Brown who produced a bunch of Rush albums. We asked him about recording Geddy Lee's voice, assuming he'd have some good stories. He didn't. He said Geddy was the consumate pro who was pretty much spot on with every take. I was hoping for something about them substituting a screeching cat for a song or two and nobody noticing... but alas, no luck.

I agree with that. His range is way beyond the scope of most male vocalists. In fact, its beyond the Guilded Cage.

yeah but Billy Corgan has the kind of voice that is awful no matter what your definition of singing is. sure his style was unique, but there's definitely a reason for that. and he has no discernable "range" to speak of. i guess his range would be from "whiney" to "unbearable". we are talking about WORST EVER here, so there's no reason why someone like Geddy Lee should even be in consideration ehre, because theres tons of people worse than him at singing.

dylan GREAT songwriter ..HORRIBLE singer...you can have what the fuck ever "award winning" backup ya like....i dont listen to that shit ...i listen to my ears ..and my ears say ..."ouch".

I know this discussion is for "worst singer ever" however I just thought of the worst which is of course, Ashley Simpson. Again, i dont know if this qualifies as "music" per say but, I happened to be watching Saturday Night Live when her "Pre-recorded vocal track cues during wrong song" incedent occured and it was the best 5 minutes of my life. :D :D :D :D :D :D

I don't know man. In my opinion singing is all about the vibe the vocalist can create within the song. You want every singer to sound professionally trained like Josh Groban? Maybe that's your thing, but it's not mine.

Dylan has a way of singing that I think lends itself perfectly to his music. Sure his tone is nasal, but could you picture anyone singing songs like "Don't Think Twice It's Alright," "Like a Rolling Stone," or say, "The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll" more suitably than Dylan? I couldn't. But then, it's all a matter of taste anyway. We like who we like.

I think there is some confusion with 'ability' and 'style'.

Style is a matter of opinion.

I have to say Bob Dylan, because ability-wise, he just doesn't cut it. Does he have a huge range? Does he sing perfectly on key? I'd have to say no.

The example I always use for myself is the guy from Journey. Can't stand him. But, he has amazing vocal ability. I'd rather listen to Bob, because I like his style more. (but keep him away from harmonicas, yikes!!)

Which is why I can't possibly vote for Mustaine as worst singer. He has the perfect pissed off underdog metal punk voice for the perfect pissed off underdog metal punk band.

Billy Corgon on the other hand, is the nastiest piece of vocal shit I ever heard. And I'm reminded of that in every song where he starts singing softly then suddenly lets rip one of his whines.

In second place was that annoying guy from Midnight Oil.

I'd like to agree with this one. Mustaine doesn't have a good singing voice, but he does use it pretty well, and when you hear it, you picture him. James Hettfield does not have a great sounding voice, but uses it effectively as a tool that defines Metallica's sound. As far as Billy Corgan, I've heard good stuff by him, and bad. Soemtimes he fits the song, sometimes not. (actually, most times not)

Doesn't mean I don't like them, but..... the two that come to my mind is Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan.

"I hurt myself today....I sang and heard it played"...

Edited: (I forgot willie and Kris Kristof)

Oh well...

Bill Corgan - perhaps its grown on me over the years, but I can't completely agree with this. It's kind of like the Dylan arguement that's been discussed. There are times (especially on first listen) that I've questioned Billy's voice, but the emotion comes through every time, so it works for me. He wasn't gifted with a great voice, but made it work for him. While we're on him, I would like to say that imo, Corgan is one of the best songwriters, ever. Honestly, I'd put him in the same class as Dylan.

Mustaine (since I put his name up here first) - come on people. "Metal punk" voice? When Dave sings, he reminds me of the the little-man-complex hoodlum kid in grade school who think's he's tough. And the lyrics? Even if he could sing worth a dime, there's his lyrics. Every song is about robots, the future, robot wars, etc. It's comedic to me. I mean, the riffs f'ing rock so hard, but he's a whiny little boy and ruins it. He trys to sound mean and scary, but isn't, and it shows.

100 years from now Bob Dylan will be in the history books. Eligible for the Nobel Peace prize several times, cover of Time Life magazine, etc. etc. Given a doctorate in literature. His works are already curriculum in schools.

Say what you will, but he has far surpassed almost everybody else regarding success, notoriety, and accomplishments. There are few living legends left. Bob Dylan, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, David Bowie, Paul McCartney, Elton John, James Brown, Neil Young, Eric Clapton.

Billy Corgan, Kurt Cobain, Pearl Jam, Green Day are of course another generation entirely, but will also be remembered in their own list.

MegaDeath and Journey, Korn, The Misfits will NOT make any list 100 years from now, and will be forgotten entirely. They just don’t have the substance behind them. They are in the “Grade B” or “Grade C” category. Light years away from memorable. No where near legend status. Normal dudes in the music business, not innovative, not interesting. (MegaDeath, what a laughable name).

I think you guys are listening to Bob Dylan only on the surface. Your not REALLY listening. He doesn’t have the technical ability of say Celion Dion or Michael Bolton, But he delivers his message as sharp as a razor blade.

Call me old fashion but I like my singers a little rough around the edges, rooted in blues/folk and early rock. The Fact that Geddy Lee can reach 27 different octaves is very nice for him, but he's the only one that really cares.

You're thinking of Glenn Danzig. He started the Misfits in the late 70s and was their singer (and sometimes guitarist and/or keyboardist) until the band broke up in 1983. He then continued on in the band Samhain before starting Danzig in the mid 80s.

In the late 90s, Jerry Only (who was the bassist for the original Misfits for quite some time) resurrected the band following a legal dispute with Glenn over the rights to use the name. Jerry's brother "Doyle" played guitar (he also played for a time in the original Misfits), and they recruited a singer and a drummer. They put out two records with that lineup before the whole thing completely fell apart, with the singer quitting and starting his own band, and Doyle doing whatever until the Danzig "Blackest Of The Black" tour (which I believe is still going on right now) where he's playing guitar with Danzig. Jerry Only is continuing to carry the torch and pretty much disgrace the Misfits name, playing bass and singing, with Dez Cadena (originally of Black Flag) playing guitar, and Robo (one of the original Misfits drummer and former Black Flag drummer) on drums.

Now that I got out of the way, I really hate the singing in this one commercial for NASCAR or something where I can't tell if there's really bad auto-tuning pulling the guy's voice into key or if he's just singing really shittily on purpose. Either way its annoying as hell and it sucks.

suprised nobody said curt cobain yet. i wouldnt agree, but i thought it would have been said by now.

id have to concur with the corgan crowd. his voice makes a man want to gnaw off his own penis if he could reach it.

sorry, i dont know the names too much since i'm not huge fans of either band...i just assumed the misfits only had one singer in their history. ive only heard their earlier stuff and danzig and thought the singer was pretty cool.
