WORST OVERRATED GUITARISTS------

What I always wondered about Jerry Garcia was why he had all those custom from hell bananamelonzebrawood guitars, but his tone, at least in my opinion, was always kinda weak. I'm not going to bag on his playing, though. He was never my fave, but it always seemed as if he was going for something new. He didn't always get there, but there were times when he threw down some cool stuff. Maybe the tone was from those weird ass amps I used to see in concert photos..."lemme see, if we take 17 two inch tweeters and epoxy them to a plexglass dome and fill it with hash oil, that ought to sound pretty far out!"

peace.

OK, C7sus, you've got a point, and a good one too. Any of these 'overrated' guitarists is somebody's pretty baby child. Jerry Garcia doesn't get me worked up the way a lot of players [many of whom have been named in thread] do. But isn't it the point to love what you think is the good stuff rather than hate what you don't? I'm the old cliche -- I enjoy everything but [fill in the blank -- for me, it's any form of rap, but my kids think rap is proof that my generation just lately came out of the caves]-- and I am always amazed at other's intolerance of things I like. Years ago, a friend and I were listening to Bob Wills and a lady spontaneously said, 'Is he some kind of a sick joke?' The Texas Playboys really offended her.
Well, I've expressed my opinion several places here, and I guess the guy who said the thread is silly is right.
But, hell, opinions are fun too. If we didn't disagree we'd all end up driving Ford Escorts probably.

I'm still stunned that somebody would say SRV is overrated, and then I read the next paragraph about Hendrix not being that great.. and THEN several posts later I see where someone says Van Halen is overrated. I can't even get past that enough to think of guitarists who really are overrated. The world is coming to an end, and soon.

Isn't it amazing?

The thread is called Worst Overrated Guitarists. If we just concentrate on worst, I maintain that anyone in a major rock "band" after '89 is the Worst Overrated guitarist. Post Nirvana sludge just hugs.

Bring real guitar playing back to rock!

But, that's just my opinion. ;-]

Jon X,

Don't let it get you down. After all, this is the world where millions of people think Kenny G is a jazz artist and that he plays beautifully (and who will be dismayed when they discover that Ken Burns' Jazz documentary never even mentions him, much less spotlights him); the world where Tiny Tim became a star for awhile and even got married on TV; where a TV show like The Brady Bunch becomes, years later, the source material for plays and feature films (which obviously somebody had to pony up millions of dollars for)... I could go on and on... :)

Hey Jon X

IMHO, Eddie Van Halen is Overrated....
He hasn't done anything worth buying in years. The last VH ablum? use it for a coaster...

But back in the day when he could blow the roof off the joint, yup, he kicked ass....

and yes, no mainstream band after '89 is worth spend 2 yen for...

As Richie Sambora said in a recent interview..."Guitar solo's are like sex, I am surprised more people don't do them"

Steve Vai is a total poser and is the posterboy for musical masturbation. Check out the concert video he did with Eric Johnson and Joe Satriani if you need a good laugh.

Wide Awake --

Man, if you're Wide Awake it's because you're on

D...r...u...g...s.

Vai's performance with G-3 was incredible.

Let me know when you finish the tab for For The Love of God. I'd like to see how you play it.

And, let me know when you compose a Grammy nominated original comprised of seven minutes of soloing.

Good God. What's next? Al DiMeola is over-rated?

Jeez.

Yup, Wes said it!

Vai is incredible live. He is a showman as well as "THE" shredder.

I have the G3 video, a bootleg video from the "Fire Garden" tour in Korea, and saw him live in Dec '99 on the Ultra Zone tour in a 250 person club.

No one comes close to him.
In the G3 video, Eric Johnson's music was great, but he is not that fun to watch, he looks like he is working to hard. Satch is Satch, he plays, plays great and is fun to watch!

Vai learned a valueable lesson from Frank Zappa...do what you want the screw everyone else and what they think. Vai is the only guy that looks like he enjoys what he does on stage, and rips off some killer stuff live.
Not to mention the Vai's music is always progressing and never sounds the same.

Vai's at the top of the pile....hands down

my 2 yen worth

Have you ever noticed the look of absolute joy on Vai's face when he's playing? The smile never comes off his face the entire time. Now, THAT'S why we play the stupid thing. ;-]

Now, how about a copy of that bootleg video? ;-]

If I had 2 VCR's...

I would smoke you a copy...
It was broadcast on Korean TV..it is pro-shot.

Right in the middle "For The Love Of God", he breaks a string on the "EVO" guitar...high E [he breaks 2 strings on EVO in teeh concert].
He steps up to the mike and says " I know how much you guys like this song, and I love to play it for you, but I can't do it with a broken string."
He swaps out guitars and picks up right where he left off...

They do the "Cross Roads" dual live [Vai and Mike Kennely] too...

mouth watering yet?

He brings a Korea guitar player out to jam on a tune...that guy rips too...

Awesome. Thanks a lot. Now I've got to search the underground sites for live Vai bootleg videos. ;-]

I thought shredding went out of style in the 80's along with Vai's wardrobe.

Wes- what does MY playing have to do with whether someone else is over-rated ? I could probably play anything of Vai's with one hand....like you're going to believe that. IMO Al DiMeola is not over-rated. ( i'm not that high)

Wide Awake

One hand huh? ROFLMAO! Well, this IS the internet. ;-] Glad to see you're sobering up. I was going to send the paramedics. ;-]

Oh yeah, did I tell you I could play Holdsworth licks with my toes?

;-]

Hey Wes....

Wes- Check E-bay...I got this one for under $10, if you want to chat Vai...e-mail me...

Wide Awake- I think it is great that you can probably play all of Vai's stuff with one hand...that is great...

One question...how come you ain't famous?

This thread is going in the wrong direction....

Wide Awake

Vai with one hand? Great job !!!
But if you tell me you can pick "Blackbird" with your pecker, I'm gonna take up the accordion.

Capo calamity

Well, life's a tradeoff...at least vocally you'll be able to hit those elusive high notes...

I went to Steve Vai's concert last spring here in Istanbul. I had digged his stuff on the G3 album but the concert was even better.

Yes! The guy definetely enjoys himself, plays some great stuff and has an incredible band (his drummer, Mike Mangini just shreds; he kills any hope you may have about being a good drummer). So you get blow after blow, but the whole thing is so enjoyable.

The saddest thing is, I could have bootlegged that concert but I thought that recording devices were restricted (they generally are).

But the good news is, that concert was professionally recorded and Vai announced that he was working on a live album which would include various songs performed in Istanbul (since it was the last city of the tour).
