One man's trash is another man's treasure I guess, but Keith Richards ?? come on dude !- one of the founding fathers and definers of electric guitar tone, first to use a fuzz on a commercially successful tune (Satisfaction), using many different sounds over the years. A tele, 335, Les Paul, Strat, etc etc straight into a cranked Fender or Hi-Watt or Vox amp; doesn't get any better.
I won't list any metal players with their scooped mid ultra distorted "death" tones, since that genre is not my cup o' tea...
I'll mention one that has been around for decades, and except for his early days and a few exceptions maybe, has the most consistently uninteresting tone - Santana. Just TOO sustained, "smooth", "warm", lacking in "bite", and predictable for me...
Worst tone for the amount of commercial success, again over decades, and again excluding the earlier years, Clapton. I just think his tone since the late seventies or so is just about as weak as one can get out of a strat.
