As much as I love Neil Peart, I hope he doesn't quit his day job.
Some of that stuff would win the award for worst performance by an otherwise great (rock) drummer.

But what makes you think NP belongs in the "worst drummers" thread? I don't hear any obvious flaws in "Cottontail" - do you?

john take it easy there ..... we can have opinions too .. THE WHITE STRIPES DRUMMER SUCKS... yeah she's really good on that floor tom on the one nation army song.... give me a break anyone can do that .. hit the floor tom 4 times in a row and keep repeating it

yeah but if it was last call in an english pub...i hope she sucks..... booo bad joke i know

you did take this thread way tooo seriously......have you seen that bumper sticker that said "mean people suck"? we ought to institute a caution for people like you "WARNING! people may be silly in this thread. thick skin may be required". lighten up. floating away is optional

so, if i have an opinion, and state it, it's not cool and i'm too serious, but you can say someone sucks and it's suppose to be just silly? sounds like a double standard to me. i'm pretty sure if i posted that someone you respected sucked, you might defend them. i'm all about humor and love reading clever funny stuff, but how is stating that someone sucks and how you hate them funny? you apparently think it's funny to say negative shit about certain musicians you don't like. i think it's funny to call you on it. i don't take any of this personally, so please don't tell me to lighten up.

It's not "obvious flaws". It's just non-convincing jazz playing. You are probably right, he's too good to be disrespected. I put it out there though, so I'll explain it:

I'm not trying to come off as snobish about it. When I was younger, I was as big a Rush fan as anyone. I love NP. I've also been playing jazz for almost 20 years (on upright bass though, not drums). I've actually played the exact same arrangement of Cottontail in college jazz band.

I hate to get into an area where you can't quantify things, but as good as NP is, he just sounds like a good high school player on that recording. If I had to give details, I'd say he's too heavy-handed & stiff. He sounds like a rock drummer (which often makes for bad jazz).

That said, there are many folks who probably dig the album, and it's probably exposed jazz to some who may otherwise not have listened. So no disrespect intended. My original statement was "worst performance by an otherwise great drummer", my guess would be that NP might even agree. :)

I second that...

They are all edited to death, punched in to death, beat detective'd to death, pitch shifted and harmonized to death, and so on.

It's hard to tell anymore who can and can't play if you never hear them live.
Same with guitar players, bass and, thank you Ashlee Simpson, singers. Talent and skill are never rewarded enough. The curse of Pro Fools, as in they might not notice if you refrain from doing this shit in public!

Someone mentioned Bostoph as over rated. Maybe so, but live, Slayer, he keeps the train from jumping the track. There sure as hell ain't anyone else in that band keeping time.

Lombardi had, to me, much better 'feel' live and kept it together. He was playing, not stamping out belt buckles.

Lars wins this thread, to me, because he is so big a target and Hettfield has stated any number of times that he has always been constrained on rhythm guit because he, not Lars, was the bands metronome. If he, James, went off exploring anywhere there was no telling what he'd come back to.

I mean, job 1, keep time. It's a lonely thing coming out of a lead and the band ain't there or already left because the drummer was concentrating on his stick twirl.

I know more than a couple jazz guys who skip that track when their playing that album. It makes them cringe. The feel is all wrong.

Still, NP is a good drummer but that track sort of sucks.

LOL. Yeah, that is some painful video to watch, too. :) I love NP, but, whoah, man, stick to rawk.

you take "hate" and "sucks" in its extreme context....like nazis hate jews or muslims hate americans. i'm using hate as in i hate asparagus (when put in salad its not that bad). i if i hated (using the most exteme) fleetwood mac then i wouldnt be using "lol" (that stands for laugh out loud). now that i've explained myself to you, yes I'm telling you to lighten up

So how come Neil is a famous drummer and you're some dude on a message board. I don't mean to sound like a dick by the way.

Poison Idea are so fantastic in the mix.

Drummers use clicks for many reasons. I've been in shows where they were used to keep the music timed with lights, special effects, etc.. Most drummers would tell you they make their job a lot harder. I'm sure Rush uses them for the same reason.

Alot of drummers (especially younger ones) think that playing simple is "boring" or "That guy sucks because he doesn't do any fills dude." The most important part of being a drummer is keeping time, and playing for the song. Alot of drummers forget that. You can't stick Niel Peart in AC/DC and expect it to sound good. Thatbeing said, you can't stick Phil Rudd in Rush and expect the same. Two different bands, two different drummers and both are very good! I've played with alot of drummers and alot of them don't realize that you have to play for the song. If it's a simple song, then do very few and simple fills. If it's a complicated song, then you can do complicated fills. We had a drummer that wanted to play everything "simple" because he said "less is more". Problem is, I agree with him but when the song needs more, you can't play less! Which brings me to the original question in this thread. My friend Matt is the worst drummer, ever!!!!! Horrible time, no chops, no hand-eye coordination and no rhythm. He played the bass drum in a marching drum corps and they booted him out! How hard is bass drum? If you have to hide behind a Washy ride cymble to avoid playing chops, then it's time to stop playing drums.

Hummmm..

Any drummer who thinks he's good, or worse yet SAYS he's good....90% of the time they suck. Ego does not = talent.

NP fits Rush

BR fits big Band

All have more money than me....so they suck.

What a silly thread.......................

I'm no drummer. But I haven't seen Keith Moon's name show up yet. I think he was amazing from a guitarist's pov. What do you all think?

That guy out of Foo Fighters (Taylor Hawkins). He gets loads of praise for his skills etc, but i only ever hear him doing the basic stuff.

Agreed Lars is nothing special, and has a annoyance factor of about 1000.
One thing I give Tommy Lee though is he played in that rotating cage back in the 80's. I am not sure if I would even attempt that, hehe.
Hanson...............No Comment ;)
The one drummer and I stress drummer (no percussionist involved on this one) that I hate is Phil Collins. I cannot stand that guy. He is soooo bland and boring and is pushed as one of the greatest of all time. Sure he can sing and play but who cares. I will give the guy props as a singer, songwriter, musician, but drummer hell no!
Oh well MHO.
