I thought they were Canadian for the longest time.... I just realized that they were Scottish recently...

Didn't the lead singer commit suicide earlier this year?

Hmmm... no idea.... that's too bad if he did -- they actually had some decent material, just their production was awful!

I remember those guys - their drummer was awesome. I believe their engineer was a cave explorer though (bad reverb joke) :D

NITRO's "O.F.R." was also terribly mixed aside from the terrible vocals. ;)

c'mon now.....that album is pure genius:D

and, really, how can you call jim gilette's vocals bad?;)

that album is mixed so that you can play it as loud as possible......read: NO BASS, it may even mention this in the liner notes

one thing that the record still does is give me a good laugh...

When you talk about albums with bad production the first, self titled Clash album has to be right up near the top of the list...Production....what production!

I still think it's a classic album though......as Voxvendor said, good music can overcome bad production. The second Clash album was badly produced as well, but in totally the opposite way.....and that didn't have good songs to save it!

Virtually every "Seattle Grunge" record released just after all that hype started.

And the evil record executive said "This shit is hot! Get it out quick, and get it out cheap!"

I also forward Korn's debut album, the enponymously titled 'Korn'... jeezus....

Everything is time related, and some stuff just sounds good sounding bad.

I mean, I have Masters Of Reality from Black Sabbath: that album sounds SO BAD! dreadfull mixing job. But I can't imagine the album with another mixing job. So the ugly sound makes it sound unique.

Btw, the nex Breeders album really sounds awful. But then, I can understand a reaction to the latest overcompressed 'as loud as it gets' sound.

another case of "great music, lousy recording":

Foo Fighters debut album. IIRC Dave Grohl did most everything himself on that one, no? Everything has that wooly... almost hissy quality to it. Colour and the Shape was a much better recording.

Funny how dif people hear things. That record is one of the most ripped off of all time. I think its one of the best sounding rock records of the last 10 years. The up front realism of the drums and vocals took the intensity to a new level. There was definitely a before and after with that record. Music wasnt the same post....

lovefool

I don't have nearly the trained ears that I'm sure alot of the people here have but one song i definitely noticed a big flaw in was "lovefool" by the cardigans...towards the end of the song the whole sound of it just changes in an instant...all of a sudden it's alot brighter and clearer...very sloppy i always thought...

Part of it was recording here in Hamilton, at Grant Avenue...

I'm sort of lost on your comment.... But, Is it because of Brian Eno touching the console... We all know what happens when he does that! :D

Ooops, sorry - missed this thread over tha last few days.

Wasn't part of the album recorded in that big honkin' mansion that was shown in the video? If I remember correctly, it was. Very little room treatment, just set up and record. What a way to record an album. You know though - I still don't think it sounds so bad - just a bit dark & muddy.

R.E.M.'s Monster that I mentioned - They might have been going for a more "rock" sound, but regardless - the guitar tone sounds like shit, the vocals are buried too far back in the mix, so on, and so on. I've always dug R.E.M., but I can't stand to listen to that album.

Just picked up Rush's new CD: vapor trials.

I LOVE Rush; but i think their last few albums, the mixes are horrible. It just gives me ear fatigue after a few minutes. I understand that Geddy's got a pretty hard voice to find a good spot for in the mix....drums sound great though :=)

Randy Newman - Bad Love. The absolute worst sounding album I've ever heard. It sounds like its been compressed with a 3630, well maybe not that bad, but pretty close.

Aww! I like the quiet, washed out sound on some of the vocal parts on that album!

I wouldn't have had the balls to mix it like that, but I can't imagine it any other way.

Yes. That's one of the worst-sounding albums I have ever heard. No midrange, too much compression, and I swear I hear some clipping.
