Dave Matthews is great, that may just be the hometown part of my subconscience sticking up for him but i really like him.

Dave matthews i also have to say is probably one of the nicest people around, one of my friends is his nieghbor and he's really cool, plus he started a bunch of rehearsal studios from DMB's old gear here in charlottesville to keep kids of the street. So he's going to get my vote.

Are we judging this poll thing on best techincal skills or well written songs, some of the best songs are the simple ones.

Thurston Moore

I got this really strange image of an older guy in a natty suit, wearing a yachting cap and calling his wife "Lovey" with a drawling voice.

Then I realized you wrote "Thurston Moore" and not "Thurston Howell III" — how silly of me.

:D

Well, I was not very surprised not to see a single one of my favorites listed in this thread. Maybe thinking in terms of 'the best guitarists ever' goes along with an unquestioning belief that the only proper thing to be played on guitar is the blues and its descendents.

If you think you have heard all of the best, but have never heard these guys, give'em a try (but you will need an open mind):

Robert Fripp
Sonny Sharrock
Fred Frith
David Torn
Brandon Ross
Adrian Belew

Wide Awake doesn't do "best"......here's a few of my favorites-

Steve Hackett
Trevor Rabin
David Gilmour
Frank Gambale
Daryl Stuermer
Steven Stills

Daryl Stuermer is my favorite current guitarist and is in his prime. He has similarities to Lee Ritenour but with more rock and fusion influences. His melodies are strong and the basis for his compositions.

Daryl! I always loved Daryl Stuermer's work on Phil Collins' records. His parts write a good portion of the song.

I second Steve Hackett as well. I just learned Blood on the Rooftops and I'm very proud.

Daryl Stuermer? Yeah. Something in the beer makes all Milwaukee guitarists great. ;)

I wouldn't like to say the best, but my favorites are:

David Gilmour
The Edge
Clapton
SRV
Mark Knopfler
Trevor Rabin
Steve Howe
Felipe Staiti (from argentinan group Enanitos Verdes)

But I do respect jazzers, shredders, classicals, etc. though I don't enjoy those styles a lot.

Maybe the thread could be called "Your Favorite Guitarist"...the whole world's best thing always sparks controversy.

My personal favorite is Slash...maybe not technically the best, but the melodies that he has and the way the notes come out of his guitar are amazing. It sounds like the guitar is singing.

As far as rhythm guitar goes (often overlooked) my vote is for Izzy Stradlin...yes I'm a big GNR fan.

Also, no one has mentioned Glenn Campbell. He's amazing.

I was gonna stay out of this topic (aside from my highly witty reference to Thurston Howell III, that is), but I just can't do it. I have absolutely no self control.

I have to agree with the person(s) who said this should really be about Favorite (rather than Best) Guitarists. If I've said it once I've said it a thousand times — art is not about competition. I could sit here and laugh at the nomination of Jimmy Page as best English folk guitarist and say, "The obvious answer is John Renbourne," but someone else then comes along and says, "No, it's Ian Anderson," and on and on. Making art into competition is always a losing proposition, and it spawns such vileness as StarSearch and the phenomenon of multitudes of bands that are similar vying for the coveted recording contract at Hot Snot Records or whatever. No thanks, I'll pass.

Also gotta chime in about shredders having no value in comparison to the Jerry Garcias of music (no disrespect meant, c7sus). The issue isn't speed but style, that sound that a player has that is like a signature. It's in the players' hands, head, and heart. Randy Rhoads and Michael Schenker are two examples of guys with speedy guitar work. They are also both very identifiable, even when tearin' it up. They know (or knew, in RR's case) how to mix up the speedy stuff with huge bends and slower passages. In other words, they used speed musically, not as the whole show. (Side note — why isn't EVH ever mentioned as being one of the guilty in the Shred Wars?)

Okay, no more ranting. On to some of my favorites:

Randy Rhoads (may the flatted 5th live on forever!)
Michael Schenker
Uli Jon Roth
Alex Lifeson
Martin Barre
Ian Anderson
John Renbourne
Stefan Grossman
Leo Kottke
Dave Mustaine
Graham Oliver (Saxon)
Kerry Livgren
Steve Morse

I could go on, but you get a bit of the picture :D.

AGAIN???

Guys, there's no "best", just different...and what I DO know is that John Frusciante is no great guitar player!!! You may like what he does, that doesn't mean he is GREAT!!!
He layers 100000000000 guitars on the records, I should sound great too that way!

I LIKE:

Thurston Moore
Lee Ranaldo
Joey Santiago (Pixies)
John Sykes
George Harrison
David Gilmour
Mick Mars
Brad Whitford
Izzy Stradlin (one of my favorites rythm guitarists ever!)
The guys from The Mission
Jerry Cantrell
Jim Martin
Trey Spruance
Dave Fyuzinscky
Vivian Campbell
Rocky George (Suicidal Tendencies)
Steve Morse
Tommy Tedesco!!!
Dick Dale
PACO DE LUCIA

AND: I know they are what we call "great" but lately, I find Satriani and Vai really boring...they just piss me off, they don't know what a silence means to music!!!

Peace

PC

Hey, how about Uncle Pecos? I just remembered him and his great stage presence. . .

"Jerry's Uncle Pecos spends the evening with his nephew [Jerry] just before a scheduled TV appearance. His guitar string is always snapping and it's always Tom's wiskers that get pulled to replace them." (from www.tomandjerryonline.com)

Bustin' strings left and right. Take THAT, Mr. Townshend!

Best Guitarists

Larry Carlton
