I don't know about best......to hard to call.
My personal favorite has got to be JIMMY PAGE.
He has always been an original.

only one vote for mick mars? and no votes for c.c. demille? what a bunch of un-educated ignoramouses...

classical - Christopher Parkening
blues - (pretty broad) SRV
80's pre-hair - Randy Rhodes; VH
80's hair - vai; yngwie (I just saw some video he did recently.. dude got fat)
80's post hair, but still had hair - Nuno Bettencourt
jazz - Di Meola; Mclaughlan
other - Eric Johnson; Danny Gatton; Albert Lee

If I could only choose one, I'd choose Jimi H.

That's that dude from Mötley Crüe right?

teeeeh tuh-tuh-tuh-tuh-tuh
teeeeh tuh-tuh-tuh-tuh-tuh
teeeeh tuh-tuh-tuh-tuh-tuh-tuh
tah-dah tah-dah...

("Live Wire intro" )

JimiStone makes some very valid points, as do others saying there is no best. But COME ON!!! Frusciante? He might be a great songwriter, but other than handling 3notes out of key-solo's HE AIN'T NOTHING compared to
Hendrix
Van Halen
Page
Iommi
Slash
Friedman
Beck (not the lo-fi loser-baby ;) )
Blackmore
DiMeola
Malmsteen
Batten
Moore (Scotty)
Moore (Gary)
Sambora
Holdsworth
Dick Dale
SRV

If you thought SRV was a tough guy playing on 0.13, Dale played on 0.18-0.60.... Now that's hella-tough!

Hey Will Davis - Lenny Breau, Cool! Everytime I mention that name it's 'who's that?'

Good to see Danny Gatton being mentioned as well.

To add to the list of great guitarists that I don't see mentioned here:

Steve Morse
Albert Lee
George Benson
Gary Moore
Richie Blackmore

I guess a better title for the thread would be 'The worlds greatest guitarists".

Ah I see JR97 added Albert Lee.

Hey Emeric, have you checked out Johnny A ? He is on the Favored Nations label. He has got some big sounds that just blew me away. After listening to some of your stuff I think that you will enjoy it.

My favorite would have to be Jeff Beck.

Hi Ginzoo. I haven't heard of Johnny A, I'll have to check it out, thanks.

A few others:

John Abercrombie
Tommy Bolin
Pat Metheny

I cant listen to much Metheny though these days, 20 or 30 secs is the max. A lot of his tunes are great, guess I burnt out on him -some of it borders on noise.

I'm way out of touch with the newer generation of guitar players out there. Stuck in the 70's.

These threads are always fun....

Your all picking Famous guitar players.. and truthfully, the best guitar player in the world is probably some unknown guy who never leaves his house....

Anyways.. My favorite guitar players are

Gidge
Scott Tansley
Chris Shaeffer
My friend Troy

Im not much for fancy 32nd note solos.... I don't even care if the right note is played.... Either they have it or they don't ;)

Vai and Satriani unfortunately don't have it. IMO

OK, so your gonna force me to pick a famous one......

Steve Clarke of Def Leppard...

RIP.

Steve Morse.... personal take the guy has more flexability than gumby. That and gangs of passion.

Jimmy Page stole his folk stuff from Bert Jansch - I'm sure you're talking about Black Mountain Side - and if you check out Bert's Black Waterside (released about two years before BMS) you will recognize it as being virtually identical to Jimmy's BMS.

As for Mr. Page being the great British Blues player - he can play the blues, but he's not Peter Green. Not even close.

The best there ever was - it's got to be Charro!

foo

:D

Johhny A..Hummm I wonder if its the same guy from a band called "The Streets" from Boston about 1980ish..Good player

Don

Hey, none of you mentioned Mr. soul guitar - Carlos Santana!
Other guitarists that are great:
John McLaughlin, Clapton, Jimmy Page, Hendrix, Eddie Van Halen

btw anyone heard of Russel Malone? Fantastic jazz guitarist!

Keith Partridge

Janice, from Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem, fer sure...

Stig O'Hara

Keith Richards

Thier all pretty much evan in my book.

A better question might be, "If you could only listen to the collected works of ONE guitarist, for the rest of yer life, who would it be?"

For me it would have to be: Stevie Ray Vaughan

All right, I get my offbeat picks-
Names left out in a moment of forgetfulness:
Charlie Christian- Every guitarist named here except probably Segovia and Julian Bream have built on this man's work!
John Mclaughlin
Jerry Garcia
Wes Montgomery
B.B. King
Roy Clark
Frank Zappa
Pete Townsend (best rythym guit I've ever seen)

Names already brought up here that I have to agree with:
Jimi Hendrix
Al Dimeola
Andre Segovia

Yeah, this is a wierd thread, but it tells you what kind of music everbody likes-Richie

Tuck Andress
Eddie Van Halen
Dave Murray
Adrian Smith
Charlie Hunter
Les Paul
SRV
Jimi
Jerry
David Gilmore

I havn't seen Robin Ford's name yet, so I'm adding it to the list. He smokes!

1. James Black (so experimental, awsome)
2. John Mclaughlan
3. Stevie Ray Vaughn
4. Jimmie Hendrix
5. Adam Jones
7. Tom Murello
8. Joe Satriani
9. John Petrucci
10 Eric Johnson

also somewhere up there......

Marty Friedman
Jason Becker
Steve Lukather
Andy Timmons
Zakk Wylde

.....keep in mind I don't only grade on Technicality, but musicality (if that's a word) and blending in/making the song interesting. James Black is the guitarist of Finger Eleven, and he's my favorite guitarist because on cd and live, he puts in the most exellent lead work, and he's technically nothing special, but a great rythm player, songwriter, and lead guitarist, and his stuff blends in with the music perfectly.
