I think this issue has been covered before, but non of the search result has been helpful for my problem.

Multitimbral playback Issue:

In Xp30,

I've set all the parts I want to be using in Performance mode on XP30, and set each part to a seperate midi channel (ch. 1 and 2) . BTW, the XP is in Layer mode, and I have pressed the function buttons and have the parts I need lit.

In Sonar,

I open 2 pre-recorded midi tracks, select both outputs to CH2, which is connected to XP30. (MOTU XT is my midi interface)

For the channel selection, I only have 2 choices, 1. Roland XP30 patch and 2. Roland XP30 patch. I pick the first one.
For bank and patch, I select the patchs that I've used in the Performance Mode. There isn't an option for "Performance Mode"

I playback, both tracks are playing back both parts, and I need each track to play each part.

ps. I've also tried the sysx thing, imported some data from XP30, but didn't know what to do with it after that. Do I need to go thru all that? or there is a different way to do this.

Any help would be great. Thanks in advance!

Al

I wish I can help you, but I don't have Roland XP30 - though I really want to have one, people says it sounds good for "average level" keyboard. So there's nothing I can do. Anyway, if I'm not mistaken, you need to enter GM mode (or sumthing) instead of Performance mode to take a full control over MIDI in.

I think that´s the first problem, you have to put a performance in single mode, in layer doesn´t works, because all the channels working there, are components of a same sound. In single mode, you have 16 separate parts...

You can choose two ways: 1) Choose one existing single mode performance. Like the ones, beyond the user bank.

2)Or you can init a new Performance, in single mode...
Choose one performance, and press Util/Card-Init-Mode Default

There´s the solution with XP-30

Now let´s see the problem in Sonar 2.2XL (my inconditional love)

I don´t get the idea, i´ll tell you how i work with XP-30 and Sonar.

First, Midi Devices, in Options menu. Then, in instruments choose all the channels and import the XP-30 Patch, in Define.... The channel 10 must be set to Rhythm set, again imported form the Define... menu

You can do, two things... If you do a New Performance in tha Mighty Roland Xp-30, go to the Sysx Panel (find it in the toolbar, the one that looks like the Zeus Keyboard, with a Lightning below), and Choose Receive Bank, Letter (C), in that list Choose JV-1080 Temp Performance...Wait...wait...wait....ready baby.
Well, check it by changing performances in the Keyboard (remember that must be in Single mode), and put in Sysx Mode press S key, or Send Bank...If it works... Just put auto send bank, for when you load the file, automately send the performance to xp-30...
Choose The channels that you want to use, the patch and that´s it...

The Other one, is work with the init Performance, and put the channels, and all the stuff...it works similar to the one before, but you have to attach to the performance of the XP-30 (reverb-chorus-EFX settings, and all that stuff)

I recommend, the first one...

Now Work it out Baby!!

Any doubt, reply
I hope you find it helpful...

Hexatonica,

what a wonderful reply!! Thank you!

Ok, I have set XP's performance mode to single instead of layer now.

I have a 8X8 midi interface, so, I am kind of confused about setting up in Sonar...I know I'm doing something wrong here cuz it's still not working. Let me describe what I have done

Option/Midi Device highlighted every in/out on my midi interface

Option/Instruments I have imported the XP30's definition. Now, this is where it gets a little confusing.

In the Assign Instrment window, there are 2 windows (left and right) On the left side, I have:

1. Port1 on MXPXT/1
1. Port1 on MXPXT/2
1. Port1....and it goes on til MXPXT/16

since XP is connected to the second port on my midi interface, I only adjusted 2. Port on MXPXT/x

Now, I highlight each of them on the left window, and choose "XP30 Performance" on the right hand window except for #10, which is set to XP30 Rhythm.

SO, now I am back in track view, midi track#1:

in none (since I have recorded them already)
out 2 Port2 on MXPXT
Ch 1 Roland XP-30 Performance
Bnk 10240 Roland Perform User
Pch User:01 EasternSplit *(this is where I saved my new performance settings to)

midi Track#2 is exactly the same except the Ch is set to 2 instead of 1.
Ch 2 Roland XP-30 Performance

BTW, I have done that sysx as you described, but I don't know how to select the channels like you mentioned except for what I have done already.

Sorry for this long question, but I think we are almost there:)

Big thanks, and yes, you are being very very helpful!

i don´t get something...

You want to work with the channels of performance?
Something like "part 1: Piano" "Part 2: violin", you want to use every part separately? If you want to do that you have set, in instruments, XP·30 Patch, instead of Performance...

We´re talking here of using the performances like a GM module, i mean 16 independent channels, if you want to work with performances like User:002 Opening Orch...(i think it´s called like this), you can´t do it, cause XP-30 works, in layer, like one-sound, with a 16 (15 melodics and 1 rhytmics) patches in it.

Please details of what you want to do

Sorry, if i don´t understand, i´m from a Spanish-spoken Country.

PD: Sysx thing: when i talk about "choose the channels" is nothing uncommon. Just put the midi output channel..

Hexatonica,

Sorry about making my question confusing. What I'm trying to do ultimately is to write an orchestra song with XP30. I want to be able to create serveral MIDI tracks with different instrument playing its own notes. So, multitimbral is what I want.

"You want to work with the channels of performance?
Something like "part 1: Piano" "Part 2: violin", you want to use every part separately? If you want to do that you have set, in instruments, XP·30 Patch, instead of Performance...

yeah, that's what I want to do. Should I be in Patch mode instead of Performance mode then? I've tried both, and the 2 midi tracks are still playing the same instruments even though I've choosen different ch, patches, and banks

I hope this makes sense

Al

Sorry for the late answer...
