Back to building speaker boxes, I have built a few over the years and 3/4" plywood is the go( 20mm if you are in a metric country).
I prefer open back as in combo's. Try this link to get an understanding of construction techniques. If it is still too difficult, send me your speakers and buy a ready made set up.

Thanks for that. Lots of reading to do there. You know what homerec really needs? A "how to", tutorial forum. Just think of all the same questions that get asked here daily that could get cleared up without hours of searching. Also, I'm sure someone could shed some light on questions like the one that started this thread.

Before you cut any holes, decide if you want to mount the speakers on the inside or if you want to "face mount" (from the front) them. There is a slight difference in the size hole needed, inside mounting requires a slightly smaller hole, for mounting from the front you have to allow room for the "basket" (the metal cage on the back of a speaker.)

Do yo have any idea what the sonic difference is in mounting a speaker to the front of the baffle vs. the back of the baffle?

thanks all of you guys for your help. i have decided that i'm going to get a woodworker to do it in the specifications of another amp. here's my next issue though. in one cab i'm having built i want to put two celestion 75's that came from a marshall 1936 2x12. they run 16 ohms stereo and 8 ohms mono. in the other cab i'm getting built i want to use two jensen speakers are from a behringer 4x12 cabinet that run 16 ohms mono and 8 ohms stereo. will there be any way to make this work?

both of the cabinets built will be 2x12.
