wondering where to start

something doesnt sound right with this mix... can anyone tell what it is?
one of the local bands here sent me this and i'm trying to figure where to start first....i think I'll just tell them to rerecord the whole thing

The snare sound sucks and the bass is muddy. The guitar is too fuzzy and distorted. I think something is missing during the verses, maybe another guitar part, something clean and funky, with the guitars panned apart. The vox don't sound bad. I like the song, kind of catchy. I'd have 'em do some retracking.

thanks for the input...yeah i think I'll probably salvage the vocals and redo the other stuff. yeah when i first heard it...it made me laugh a bit so i said I'd give it a shot.

I agree with grinder. The one thing that annoys me off the bat is the guitar. It's a pretty crappy sound to begin with and it just sits in the middle of the mix fighting the vocal.

If I HAD to use that track I would pan it to one side and try sending a delayed signal to the opposite side. Better still track a second guitar and pan to opposite sides.

I agree with Grinder and Tom....

That guitar sound is just awful........ sounds exactly like a screechy swarm of of angry bees.

Snare sounds like a bad sample that was squashed with compression.

The bass is very bad too... it's really really murky and undefined, and it's not soncially locked-in with the kick at all.

Other than that the vocals seem usable....
