I have a non-usb 1202FX and a M-Audio FT Pro, and Im going nutso trying to figure out how things get hooked up. One day on another pc, everything was fine, and when I moved things, now the recordings are weak with buzz and noise. Cant believe a different computer with the same software could make a difference.

I wanted the mic and guitar plugged into the back of the FT Pro, not the front, as it
looks nicer, but then does not sound well. Soft vocals instead of loud.

So now that I can post a picture, you can see what I have. The two jacks in the 1202fx are going to the front of the FTP, but I wanted them to be in the back.
So many buttons and turning knobs one way and another. The software also is a pain setting it up for mono or stereo and Im trying to do a voice on
one channel and guitar on another. Im using a ST51 Sterling mic that is hidden in this pic.

Just to see if the noise and buzz goes away ..... try doing a test recording just using the battery power of your laptop.

I downloaded a new program called "Reaper" and I was able to record and it was better. Im starting to think that the M-Audio is not getting enough power from just usb and I need to get a 300mA 9V adapter to get it
up to its full potential. ASIO drivers and others I was able to get new ones.......so now Ive done so much new stuff I dont know what fixed the problem. Oh Well, at least Im on the way. Now I have to temper the
gain and sounds. I like to have the delay on and it creates an echo......but that makes me sing flat sometimes at the end of some sentences. Wish I could have it record with the FX, but not hear it in my Mic while im
recording. I have so much to learn !!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you Moresound

No problem CT. In your headphone mix you should turn the FX off.

The rear inputs on the M-Audio areusually line level inputs and so are expecting a line level in. Plugging a mic or a guitar into these will sound like crap as they are not line level signals and in the case of the guitar are also a much higher impedance signal.
Mics and Guitars usually on M-audio stuff need to be plugged into the combination Mic/Inst inputs on the front of the unit (imagine that ;))

So the back jacks on the M-audio are totally different then the ones in the front........ neatness of the wires was easier from the back, but if I have to use the front, no big deal, as all mature, non troll people who want to help others know: its the sound that is the most important thing and at least SOME people have positive comments and are helpful instead of being an @$$.

I have so much to learn just with the terminology, never mind trying to hook things up, and I appreciate your help very much.

So I can turn off the effects in my head set, but still have them on the recording....kewl !!!!!!!!

I forgot..... The 1202FX, do I use the Main Out or Control Out to go into my M-audio Fast Track front inputs ( sense I cant use the back jacks ) ?????? Thanks !!!!!!!!!!

Sweetwater inSync I found a good source for learning the correct meaning of stereo terminology and will have a better understanding now. Always good to learn new things !!!!!

it looks like the back inputs on the m audio are inserts which means they are post preamp and are expecting a signal that is already at line level
Also since they are inserts and not inputs they are probably sending a signal on the tip part of the cable and receiving the return on the ring part of the cable I can't really read the spec sheet you posted but that would be fairly standard for inserts which are designed to allow you to put something like a compressor after the preamp to process the signal and pass it back to the interface's analog to digital converters
Plugging mic (preamped externally) or guitars (that would need to come through a DI box) directly in to one of these if you are not using correctly configured cables would probably cause you problems

Can I ask a quick question?

What do you actually use the 1202FX for? From what info you've given us I can't see any need for it in your setup.

Surely it would be better (and easier) to cut that out of the signal chain and do everything straight in/out of the interface?
