***Windows not reckognizing Hard Drive???***

Finally i grew a set and bought Windows XP Pro (i dont know if any of you have read my past delimas... but to fill you in i bought the 64-bit version and got screwed)

So I install it its all good however, i have two hard drives. My computer is only showing the C drive, which is the one i installed windows on. And when i go into device manager my second hard drive shows up under the "hard disk drives" but it cannot be seen in "my computer".. does anyone know how i could get it to show up.. could this be a (master-slave) problem??
 
Are you setting up a RAID? If you are, then you'll probably have to install your RAID drivers. I've only done this once so I can't remember.

But after you put the Windows CD in the drive and reboot, and it takes you to the setup screen, it should say at the bottom "Press <key> to install 3rd party RAID/SCSI drivers".

I think that's when you have to do it. You might also be able to do it after XP is installed. I don't know.

Also, go into your BIOS and make sure the hard drives are being detected and they are setup properly. Your BIOS should have some sort of RAID configuration settings.

Maybe someone else who's done this a few times can be of more help.
 
Assuming it's a new drive, partition/format it in disk management (right click My Computer, Properties, Disk Management) and you should be good to go.
 
I think I had the same problem when I switched back from x64. I think you need to go into the Administrative Options in the control panel and initialize it. Sorry I can't give a step-by-step, but I'm at work, but its the same control panel that you use to create partitions.
 
did you figure it out?

I thought Raid was for roaches, ants, and spiders...not computer? have they made a home inside your pc?? seriously what is RAID?


man, why can't they just make things compatible like apple...at the very least they should give consumers more information on what is compatible for what and when you have to install drivers...especially for creative applications since creative people aren't always the most technically inclined.

here's an idea for manufacturers of pc software and hardware: work together instead of competing and trying to sabotage each other, so pc's will be more user friendly, more compatible across the board, and you will all sell more products!!!!1
 
i remember having a similar problem when i first built my current computer, but i dont know what i did to fix it, haha. i know that after i replaced the PSU everything seemed to work fine. but yeah i had the same problem, the drive would show up in the device manager, but when i clicked on My Computer, the drive wasn't there. anyway, thats probably no help to you, so i'll leave now, haha. good luck.
 
I looked up the steps real quick:

1) Go to run in start menu

2) Type 'diskmgmt.msc'

3) if your problem was like mine, My Computer wouldn't show the drive, but Device Manager would. In the screen that comes up after you type 'diskmgmt.msc' and hit enter, you should see the drive sitting there. Right-click and select initialize.

Let me know if that works.

hey i tried it .. and my 2nd hard drive doesnt show up in that ethier?? im suprised it even shows up in the device manager.
 
Shit, that's crazy. Maybe it somehow got setup as a RAID which might explain why the Device Manager (and probably the BIOS) recognize it, but the others see only one disk. Unfortunately, I don't know a whole lot about RAID's so I can't really add much more to that.

The only other things I can think of is: the jumpers on the drives are conflicted, but if both were recognized under a different OS and you haven't changed them, that'd quickly rule that out; or if you were changing the boot order in the BIOS something could be conflicting in there, but honestly I kind of doubt that would create this problem.

I guess I don't know... :confused:

What kind of drives are they: are they SATA or IDE, if they are different, which one is the slave and which is the master?

When i was running in the 64-bit version i had the same problem.

Both drives are sata

I dont remember setting them to master or slave or anything, so maybe i should do that. Just to make sure i do it right, i should set the drive with windows as the master drive and the other one slave right?? and what ive i add a third drive... would i set that to slave too?

Oh yeah the proirety thing too, actually in BIOS i set the 1st proirety to hard disk and disabled the 2nd 3rd and 4th
 
how is it wired to your motherboard? IDE or SATA?

could be you need to change the jumper settings over on it to set it up as a slave drive. there should be a sticker on the drive telling you the correct settings for it to be a slave...otherwise you should be able to find them online. That would be my guess if it's not showing up in the disk manager

I'd have to agree with bennychico's post below yours. I'd check the jumpers on your slave unit, there should be a diagram on the top of it for different configs. If that doesn't resolve it, I'm at a loss.
 
alright im gonna shut her off and try to change this then... I have one more question before i do this though.. I have a third hard drive from my other computer that i want to put in and get some files off of it and then take it out. But heres my question(s) It is a single 120 GB HD partitioned into two seperate. It is IDE also

1. It has windows installed on it, will this effect anything?

2. How do i hook it up (in terms of slave and master)?

good luck with that
 
hook it up as a slave. it won't load the OS off that drive, and you can copy your files from it. i've done that before when transferring stuff to a new computer.
