haha well...i try. i have nothing better to do while i sit here and vegetate at work.

well ive pulled the drives out... nothing on them shows me how to configure them for master or slave or anything!!!!

is RAID the answer here?

I have the windows drive hooked in SATA 1 on the board and the second drive hooked into SATA 2 on the board.

Now ive pulled out my third drive from my other computer and this one does have a diagram on switiching it to slave ... so i did it. and now i will hook it back in IDE.

what could i possibly do here to make the second drive slave??

i dont think SATA drives have jumpers? the computer is supposed to figure out which one's the master and which one's slave.i believe the problem i had was with a IDE and SATA drive, the computer wouldnt read from the SATA. right now i have 2 IDE drives and they work fine, then i believe i tried the SATA drive and it worked OK later, but i'm not using it right now. i think when i was trying to run all 3 HDs it was overloading the old power supply or something.

yeah i dont know what the hell im doing right now.. im pretty pissed, i just want this shit to work!!

Its the most anoying thing trying to screw in a 50 pound rackmountable computer case everytime you want to change something!!!

sorry for the venting im jsut being a bitch right now!!

this is what i did

first of all broke my wrist taking this shit out of the rack! then unhooked everything>screwed the third hard drive in>gave power and hooked the IDE up and left the SATAS alone.... computer wont start!

which means i have to get the son of a bitch outta the rack again

i couldnt even tell you right now cause i cant even get it working anymore.. but its an ASUS

And when i go into device manager my second hard drive shows up under the "hard disk drives"

Here do this...

go to control panel
then Administrative Tools
then to Computer Management
then on the window that pops up
Click on Disk Management.
Since it's in your device manager, I have a feeling it's not totally formated/partitioned correctly.
Anyways back to the steps...

On the disk management part, it will show you your hard drives
in the second half of the window, it says something like

Disk 0 - (your hard drive name) (C:), NTFS or FAT, and should also say Healthy (system) also probably will say Disk 1 for your second drive.

there should be your second hard drive in there too.
Right click on the little white bar with that info in it.
A menu should pop up of course, that'll say Open, Explorer, Mark Partition as Active etc... If it's partitioned, format the drive, assign a drive letter & all that. It SHOULD show up now....

If not, I'll have to get the motherboard model, which is usually printed on the motherboard itself.

Also, is the second drive fresh & brand new?? I just saw a post earlier that you said it didn't show up in there either (the steps I mentioned).
I believe that you may need to reformat & repartition that drive to get it working. I'm not sure in your case, but in every case that it does something like what your mentioning, it's because the second hard drive file system is still native to the original OS system.

Uh... you can partition from Windows XP. All these little details are irrelevant. If it's showing up in device manager, then you've got it configured correctly. You should be able to do whatever you need to from disk management. On the disk you're having problems with in disk management, does it say FAT32 or NTFS or have a drive letter or anything? If not, you need to right click the whitespace and select new partition (or something along those lines, I don't have a spare drive to test with) and after that format it. It's really that simple

EDIT: CRAP! Realized that in my first post I said Properties, I meant Manage. Sorry

Oh my god it worked!!!!

you sir... are the man THANKS SO MUCH

rep going to everyone that contributed!

now heres another simple one for ya..

I was forced to make it letter F and i want it to be letter D... but my cd rom is D so how do i change the letter... i remember seeing the place to do it when i was cofiguring everything but i cant find it now.. if you dont know its not a big deal... ill figure it out!

Go back to Disk Managment.. Right click your CD rom and pick "Change Drive letter and paths.." click change... pick any other letter just to free up the D.. then right click on the drive you want to change.. pick D... then if you want, go back and change your CD rom to F..

What Minset said was right on the mark, just what I almost posted yesterday, but sorry I didn't, couldof saved you more trouble. Anyway, I have had that same issue before. Glad you are ok now!

ok another quick stupid one!!

when i start windows it goes to that blue screen where you can select which user you want to sign in as ... since i am the only user of this computer it is pointless for me. How do i make it so that it just skips that and goes right to my desktop??

i know i had it like this on my last computer but.. i forgot how to change it again :o

yeah i noticed that when he was giving me the steps ... i guess i shoulda looked around better when you had me in that direction. Thanks though!

To auto logon, download windows xp power tools, there is a option there to automatically log you on. You should never leave passwords blank and the power tools solution works well in this regard since it effectively types it for you

download power tools.. i dont remember doing that... isnt there another way to do this ??

Sorry. its powertoys, not power tools

here is the link

Trust me. this is how you want to do it. Leaving an open password is a BAD idea

Word of caution when swapping drive letters with your D drive: Some programs that require a disc to run (such as games) wont work unless that disc is running on the same drive it was installed from. I'm not sure if just changing your CD-ROM drive letter would cause any conflict with this, but it seems possible. Probably best to have all your drive letters in order before installing any such program or you can always switch them back if it is a problem.
